5 Challenges of Twice-Exceptional Learners (2e) 🚀 But first—what does twice exceptional (2e) mean?🤔 👉It refers to individuals who are both gifted and have learning or developmental challenges 🙋‍♀️(such as ADHD, dyslexia, or autism). This unique combination comes with incredible strengths and unexpected challenges. Here are 5 common struggles 2e learners face: 1️⃣ Patience Struggles: Their giftedness allows them to excel in some areas, but it can be frustrating when they encounter subjects that don’t come as easily. 2️⃣ Misunderstood as Lazy or Unmotivated: Many 2e learners are labeled as lazy when they don’t perform at their peak, as the misconception persists that gifted kids should excel at everything if they try hard enough. 3️⃣ Self-Esteem Issues: Weaknesses can take a toll on their self-image, leading to feelings of inadequacy. 4️⃣ Lack of Engagement: It’s tough to motivate them for work that doesn’t spark their interest or seem valuable. 5️⃣ Social and Emotional Challenges: Many 2e learners experience difficulties with social awareness and emotion regulation, making connections with peers harder. Recognizing these challenges is the first step toward providing the support they need. 💪 Are you or someone you know twice-exceptional? Let's expand our understanding of "hyperactivity." 💫Looking for more info on Giftedness & Overexcitibilities? Comment LEARN MORE💫 When I first started teaching and hearing about ADHD in educational settings, I heard that word "hyperactive" and my mind jumped (pun intended) to kids bouncing out of their seats, running around, just uncontrollable physical energy. And yes, it CAN be that. But it can also look like hyperactivity of the brain - which is why according to this study that looked at teacher/parent rating of ADHD/Non-gifted, Gifted/Non-ADHD and Gifted/ADHD - the one area where Gifted/ADHD scored significantly higher was in "hyperactivity." Specifically, these three areas: ✅️Excessive talking ✅️Talking out of turn ✅️Fidgeting/movement 💡So what can we do with this?💡 It can be hard to tease out Psychomotor Overexcitibility vs. ADHD. This isn't a diagnostic checklist by any means, but this study sheds light on the fact that if your GT child is exhibiting these three behaviors with consistency and intensity, it could warrant a deeper look. 📣My 2E (specifically adhd/gifted) people...do you feel like this fits YOU? 💫Looking for more info on Giftedness & Overexcitibilities? Twice Exceptional Kids: Understanding Gifted Neurodivergent Brains Some kids read the universe like a textbook but trip over everyday tasks. That contrast isn’t laziness. It’s twice exceptional wiring. Gifted. Neurodivergent. Complex. When we match support to both their strengths and their struggles, these kids thrive in ways that make perfect sense. 2e or twice exceptional is when you have an IQ in the 98th percentile or above and a learning disability like ADHD, Autism, Dyslexia, Sensory Processing Disorder, etc. Not everyone has all of these — but many recognize themselves in several: • Rapid, layered, abstract thinking • Deep curiosity and pattern recognition • Emotional intensity and sensitivity • Sensory overwhelm (sound, light, texture) • Strong sense of justice or morality • Perfectionism masking struggle • High output followed by burnout • Big feelings with limited regulation support • Feeling “too much” and “not enough” at the same time • Thriving with depth, struggling with structure This isn’t a flaw. It’s a nervous system that needs both challenge and regulation. 2e doesn’t mean broken. It means complex. If this helps something click, save it 🤍 We’ll keep unpacking what support actually looks like. Drop a 🫶 if this feels like you 👇 #neurodiversity #adhd #gifted #autism #twiceexceptional

Twice exceptional (2e) students are one of the most largely unidentified and misunderstood populations of students in our classrooms. ✨It’s true AND it’s understandable because 2e profiles are extremely complex. ✨We are still FAR behind in properly educating our educators and medical professionals in identifying and understanding the complexities of 2e. 🦋 In case you’re not familiar, 2e is when a person is both gifted in one or more areas and has one or more learning differences. 🌟If you suspect you or or child might be 2e, here are a few common characteristics you want to look for… 👉🏼1. Probably the MOST IMPORTANT factor …ASYNCHRONOUS development. This looks like areas of exceptionally high ability coexisting with areas of extreme challenge. 👉🏼 2. Uneven academic performance. This is a hallmark of the 2e profile. A’s in one area and failing in another is not uncommon due to these pockets of extreme strengths and weaknesses. 👉🏼3. Perfectionism is very common. Fear of failure can cause these kids to opt out of trying anything they don’t believe they’ll be successful at doing. 👉🏼4. Extremely focused interests. Often passionate about a specific subject area or topic. 👉🏼5. Advanced moral reasoning. These people often have a strong sense of justice and care deeply about social justice issues. ✨Understanding these elements of a student’s profile and looking for ways to incorporate them into their learning environment is the BEST way to build self confidence and create buy in for meaningful learning. 💗 Any questions or comments? Giftedness isn't just being "smart" or "ahead." It's a different way of thinking and viewing the world, and it comes with its own set of blessings and struggles. While academic concepts may come more easily to gifted kids, many are twice-exceptional, meaning their strengths are paired with areas of deeper struggle where they need additional support. As parents, it can be overwhelming to consider how to challenge your gifted kids as they move forward quickly in some areas but not others. We're excited to bring you this conversation with Erin Vanek, all about understanding and supporting gifted kids, asynchronous development, building frustration tolerance, and more!
