Cutting out ultraprocessed foods changed so so much for me. i struggle to recognise myself from a few years ago. One of the things Ultra processed food affects is the permeability of your gut lining allowing particles in to your body that aren’t supposed to be there. The body sees these particles as a threat and tries to fight them. This leaves your body in chronic inflammation as it’s constantly thinking it needs to defend itself. So much disease and and illness is caused by inflammation. So ultimately yes we should strive to eat real food and this is just one of many reasons #nutrition #gymgirl

Some of them may surprise you 👀. - Many demonise the likes of coco pops, Fanta and sweets because they contain refined sugar. - But when faced with nutritious foods high in sugar the same people claim the likes of granola, fruit smoothies and other nutrient dense foods are better for you because they have ‘naturally’ occurring sugar. - Physiologically, sugar is sugar regardless of where it comes from. It’s all broken down the same in the end. Consuming sugar in jam will fundamentally have the same physiological result as consuming sugar from honey. - The elements that make high sugar, nutrient dense foods more supportive options for health and composition are the additional micronutrients and fibre they contain to support functional health and satiety, not the type of sugar within. - The more you know about the food you eat, the better you can support your diet. 🙏 - #nutrition #sugar #weightloss

Personally I don’t find the puritanical mindset regarding ultra-processed foods all that helpful. You can eat UPF and still be healthy. In fact, avoiding it all together can be unhealthy. There are many ultra-processed foods I consume daily - plant milks, nutritional yeast, protein powder to name a few. Yes this video is a Whole-food plant-based recipe (Dense Bean Salad) which has nothing to do with the VO 🤣 but if you’re inspired by the UPF conversation it’s the perfect recipe to give a go. Ingredients Juice of one lemon 2 fat, minced garlic cloves 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 1/2 tbsp dried oregano 1/2 tsp salt, + more to taste 1/4 tbsp black pepper 80g fresh kale, de-stemmed, washed and roughly chopped 1/3 of a red onions finely diced 200g dried pasta 2.5 tins mixed beans, about 600g drained weight 1 red bell pepper, finely chopped 1 yellow bell pepper, finely chopped 1 small cucumber, finely chopped 200g crumbled extra firm tofu (I used fermented tofu, if not using fermented tofu season the crumbled tofu with lemon and salt before adding) Small handful of chopped parsley 70g chopped, pitted Kalamata olives 1 red or green chilli, finely chopped (optional) Method: Prep and chop all the veg, drain the beans and cook the pasta in very salty water, according to the packet instructions. Measure out the dressing ingredients so you’re good to go. In a large mixing bowl, add the lemon juice, garlic, olive oil, oregano, salt and pepper, then whisk together and season to taste. Add the kale leaves and massage for 2-3 minutes with your hands. You want the leaves to soften. Taste one to see! Then add the raw onion and toss well. Add all the rest of the ingredients and give a good toss with your hands (or tongs if you like). Serve with some toasted seeds for crunch! #upf #ultraprocessed #proteinbar
