DEStarting in 2026, Major League Baseball will roll out an Automated Ball-Strike “Challenge” system instead of going all in on full-time robot umps. Human umpires will still call balls and strikes, but teams can challenge certain calls using 5G-backed technology that checks a precise, player-specific strike zone.
Each team starts with two challenges and keeps them if they win, similar to replay rules in the National Football League or National Basketball Association. The strike zone is customized to each hitter using exact height measurements, with the top set at 53.5% of their height and the bottom at 27%, instead of using one standard box for everyone.
Hawk-Eye cameras track whether any part of the ball touches that zone, cutting down on obvious missed calls while still keeping the human element in the game. The system has been tested in the minors since 2022 and during Spring Training, and it adds only about a five-second delay that shows up on the videoboard.
Teams are already thinking strategically about when to use challenges, especially in big moments, and they even get extra challenges in extra innings. One limitation is that you cannot challenge a call if a position player is pitching.
This change also comes after years of frustration over blown strike calls in key moments. There have been numerous instances where pitchers and hitters were clearly affected by bad calls, including one infamous minor league game where Yoshinobu Yamamoto had a perfect game taken away after a clearly missed strike three call extended an at bat.
Situations like that have fueled support for a system that can correct obvious mistakes without completely replacing umpires, giving the league a balance between tradition and technology.
