CNEarlier this year, the Trump administration dismantled USAID, the agency responsible for international aid. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio insists that “no one has died” because of the cuts. Even though the US withdrew from Afghanistan four years ago, it had still contributed nearly half their total aid. Then it cancelled $1.7 billion in contracts, of which around $500 million had yet to be disbursed. The US State Department did not respond to CNN’s request for comment. CNN’s @izyeung traveled to Afghanistan to investigate.

LIUSAID was the main U.S. agency that helped deliver lifesaving aid around the world, including food, vaccines, HIV treatment, famine early warning, and emergency response. All for less than 1% of the federal budget.
In 2025, USAID was effectively dismantled through DOGE cuts and rapid program terminations with a slash and burn approach. The disruption to food and medical supply chains and loss of expertise has resulted in, as of November 2025, 600,000 lives lost - 2/3 of which are children.
USAID had an outsized impact saving lives and creating goodwill and global stability - not only for those directly supported, but for Americans as we monitored and responded to disease spread and instability around the world. Not to mention it was the right thing to do, and made me proud to be an American.

THToday, 23 February, marks one year since Donald Trump shut down the government agency USAID.
Inspired by @alastaircampbell @restispolitics , I have decided to use my nomination, granted to me as a member of the Norwegian Parliament, to put forward USAID for recognition.
Since its establishment in 1961, USAID has played a central role in advancing global health, expanding access to education, strengthening food security, promoting women’s health and rights, and supporting development in low and middle income countries. Accounting for more than 40 percent of total international aid, the agency is estimated to have helped prevent approximately 91 million deaths in developing countries between 2001 and 2021.
Researchers at the Barcelona Institute for Global Health warn that the scaling back of U.S. foreign aid could result in more than 14 million additional deaths by 2030, with approximately one third occurring among young children.
This award would honour the agency’s decades long commitment to building peace by addressing the the root causes of conflict. Poverty, hunger, inequality and lack of opportunity are powerful sources of instability, desperation and violence. By working to reduce these conditions across the globe, USAID has helped lower the risk of conflict and strengthen stability in vulnerable regions.
Such recognition would also affirm the indispensable role of international aid in preventing conflict, safeguarding human dignity and saving lives at scale. At a time when the global aid system is under increasing pressure, it would send a clear message that long term commitment, moral leadership and global solidarity remain essential foundations for a more peaceful world.
Their mission must endure.
