INThe history of frustrating user interfaces is nearly as old as computing itself. In the early days of programming, user interfaces were designed by developers, for developers - think blinking green cursors on monochrome terminals in the 1960s. Usability wasn’t a concern, because the average user was a computer scientist.
As personal computers spread in the 1980s and 1990s, GUI (graphical user interface) design exploded. While icons and windows made things more accessible, they also opened the door to chaotic design - cluttered menus, hidden features, and bizarre input combinations. Remember Clippy?
In modern times, intentionally bad or confusing UI design has become a meme - from joke operating systems in games to art installations poking fun at real-world frustrations.
