GRVEIS—Vent, Enter, Isolate, Search—is a proven rescue technique used when victims are believed to be trapped behind a closed door in a fire environment. By venting a window for access, firefighters can make rapid entry, immediately isolate the room by closing the door, and conduct a targeted search where survivability is highest.
The effectiveness of VEIS lies in speed, control, and discipline. Isolating the room limits the flow of heat and smoke, improving conditions for both occupants and firefighters while buying critical time. This focused approach allows crews to prioritize life safety without unnecessarily exposing themselves to worsening fire conditions elsewhere in the structure.
Through continued training, GJFD firefighters refine communication, decision-making, and coordination to ensure VEIS is performed efficiently and safely. These skills translate directly to real-world rescues—where seconds matter and preparation saves lives (usually we just break the window).
