KEIf you want to practice cybersecurity properly, building a small homelab is one of the best things you can do.
Here's a simple way to build your first cybersecurity homelab.
First, install a virtualization platform so you can run multiple machines safely on the same computer.
You can use:
• VirtualBox
• VMware Workstation
• Proxmox (more advanced but very powerful)
Once virtualization is ready, create a few virtual machines.
For the attacker machine, you can use a penetration testing OS such as:
• Kali Linux
• Parrot OS
• BlackArch
These systems already include hundreds of security tools like Nmap, Burp Suite, Metasploit, Wireshark and many others.
Next, create target machines where you will practice attacks and analysis.
Some great vulnerable apps and practice environments are:
• DVWA (Damn Vulnerable Web Application)
• OWASP Juice Shop
• Metasploitable 2 / Metasploitable 3
• OWASP Broken Web Apps
• WebGoat
You can also add normal operating systems such as:
• Ubuntu Server
• Windows
• Debian
This helps you practice things like enumeration, scanning, privilege escalation and system hardening.
After creating the machines, place them in the same isolated virtual network inside your virtualization platform. This allows the attacker machine to interact with the targets without touching your real network.
Your basic homelab can look like this:
Attacker VM
→ Kali Linux / Parrot OS
Target VM
→ Metasploitable / DVWA / Juice Shop
Optional extra machines
→ Windows / Ubuntu / logging system
From here you can start practicing things like:
• network scanning
• vulnerability discovery
• web exploitation
• log analysis
• system hardening
The goal is simple:
break things → understand them → fix them.
Start small.
You don’t need a huge lab to learn real skills.

GP1. Setup a virtualized homelab (Proxmox, VMware, Hyper-V, VirtualBox)
- Learn to build VMs, setup Linux and Windows hosts.
2. Spin up a Windows Server VM, create a domain, join a workstation to the domain.
- Configure DNS/ DHCP
3. Deploy a pfSense VM as your homelab firewall and router.
- Set firewall rules, build VLANs, etc.
4. Setup a Linux VM and run your first web server.
- install Apache or Nginx and host a webpage accessible from your host machine.
5. Setup Grafana + Prometheus to monitor your existing VMs.
- Prometheus to scrap metrics (CPU, RAM, disk usage)
- visualize with a grafana dashboard
