LYOk no gatekeeping, here is how I make them ✨
I use Vroid Studio a 3D character creation software for stylised anime characters. It’s free to use! It creates a fully rigged VRM model so then I can use it for mocap using their partner apps such as TDPT on my phone (I love the Japanese Vtuber community for this) of course this kind of mocap is very lowlift, hence the cardboard fingers, but its great to use as a base for 3D animation. Sometimes if needed I bring the character into Blender to customise it more.
Now how I achieve this stylised 2D look is by customising and handpainting all the textures.
I was always embarrassed to share this, because I felt conscious I was basically using a software that does all the hard part for me, but I just need to remind myself I am an illustrator at core and because it’s so templatised, it actually forces me to get really creative with it to still create unique characters that differ from other Vroid models.

PHHow to use the new VTubestudio Layer Groups feature! In Beta as of 8/17, but releasing soon.
This update gives us the ability to group multiple artmesh (aka, your art layers) so that you can color them simultaneously. This is a complete game changer for recolors!
To make a layer group, go to your model settings menu and select ‘customize model.’ Here you can choose the “set up layer groups” option and pick each artmesh for a new group. Then, select customize model again, and customize multiply/screen color for artmesh. In the top right there is a new button, “from group,” which lets you choose your newly made group for bulk recolors.
I actually started rigging recolors IN LIVE2D in order to avoid the recolor menu in VTS (sorry denchi, i love you though). This is gonna save a ton of time for riggers and model sellers, and will probably mark my return to using the app for color control and not Live2D!
