Your breathing may be one of the reason your wall balls feel harder than they need to It’s pretty simple - Breathe in when you are offloaded. You are upright, not compressed, and it is easier to take a full breath and get more oxygen in. Breathe out when you are loaded with the ball. This is the most compressed position and the hardest time to inhale, so exhaling here makes more sense to me! This is my personal experience, and it works very well for me and definitely has served as a strategy when I’ve gone unbroken! The goal here is rhythm, not pure survival. And it can feel counterintuitive initially.. especially to me who has always practiced weightlifting (where you’re taught not to breathe out at the bottom of a squat). In my experience, dialling in your breathing rhythm: • Helps you stay calm under fatigue • Acts as a mental anchor late in the race • Improves throw accuracy, I find it enhances focus when you’re on pain! • Reduces tension and no-reps Tension does not support performance. If you want your unbroken wall balls to blow up and to start hitting BIG sets in your races - start focussing on these 3 things👇🏼 1️⃣ Focus on rhythm over speed Trying to go fast shouldn’t be your goal until you can do a high number of wall balls unbroken. The fastest way to get to 100 reps is not to put the ball down. So until you’re there, slow it down and focus on maintaining a controlled, consistent rhythm. 2️⃣ Control your squat and use your legs Yes, moving a bit faster and taking advantage of the bounce you can get at the bottom of your squat is more efficient BUT, this is only the case if someone has access to a stable, full-range squat. You will be better off focussing on controlling your squat a little more and striving to maintain the strongest positions you can. Setting you up to get the most out of your legs and not become reliant on your relatively weaker shoulders as you start to fatigue. 3️⃣ Remember to BREATHE It continues to baffle me how often people answer the question “When do you breathe during your reps?” with something along the lines of “I don’t” or “Whenever I remember” The more emphasis you place on controlling your breathing, the better you will be able to control your heart rate. I’m not saying it won’t be high or won’t increase throughout your sets, but if you don’t think about your breathing AT ALL, you are setting yourself up for failure by prematurely gassing yourself out. If you’re training them on their own, then you might be able to get away with 1 breath per rep, as the number of reps increases or the session progresses, you may then want to move to 2 breaths for each rep. This helps me to maintain a consistent breath rate throughout my sets, ultimately helping me keep my heart rate as controlled as possible.
