DCPOV you’re tagging along to a mussel survey being conducted by DCR’s Natural Heritage Program in the South Anna River. Lead Field Zoologist Ellison Orcutt points out the common Eastern elliptio (Elliptio complanata), a freshwater mussel.
Some of the mussels are measured and all collected are counted and returned to the river. If any rare mussels are found, they are tagged. The mussel survey also includes collecting water habitat data like stream temperature and estimated substrate cover. 📋
The data gathered helps inform DCR’s new map that predicts freshwater mussel habitat across Virginia’s part of the Chesapeake Bay watershed. 🗺️ This work was funded through a Chesapeake WILD grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (@nfwf), led by DCR and the @chesapeakebayfoundation.

PRIf you’ve seen headlines like this in the media this week, then I’m here to tell you it’s scaremongering.
The media loves to put a spin on these things in order to draw, to get a reaction and to get us engaged.
Porridge is totally fine to be eating as are crumpets. In fact, I’d say that all foods can form part of a balanced diet.
This legislation is around reducing the advertising to children of foods that are high and fat salt and sugar, which I think is a good idea.
It isn’t saying that those foods can’t be eaten or that they are bad foods. It’s a case of knowing that adverts can very much drive children to want to consume those food more.
