AD@advicewitherin ✨ Weaponized incompetence ✨🙄 it’s when an individual feigns helplessness or inability to do a task, and therefore refuses to do it or does it wrong.
🪧 This is SO common in the workplace & can be really difficult to navigate when it’s your peer & you can’t see the signs.
😤 Weaponized incompetence is mean (!!) do not be fooled by their compliments.
🎣 They are trying to play dumb so hopefully you take the bait & do all their work for them. Do NOT fall for it!
🏀 They are trying to pass the ball to you and everyone else in order to avoid working.
❌🏀 Do not take the ball.
🏀💨 Put the ball back in their court.
🧠 Make THEM do the mental work. Show them that being lazy only results in them having to do more work.
💬 “So if you don’t want to finalize the presentation, how are you going to contribute to our meeting tomorrow?”
💬 “Would you rather do [harder task] or do [original ask]?”
💬 “Finalizing the presentation is your responsibility today, so if it’s not complete for our meeting tomorrow, what are you going to do to fix it?”
✍️ After dealing with them in the moment, be sure to privately document the interaction so you can reflect this in peer evaluations & feedback forms.
