Jonas Salk created the polio vaccine. When asked if he was going to patent it, he said: "Would you patent the sun?"
We tell that story today like it's this sweet, heartwarming anecdote. But think about what it actually reveals.
It reveals that we now live in a world where NOT profiting off a life-saving discovery is considered remarkable. Where choosing humanity over a paycheck is the exception, not the expectation.
The fact that we treat Salk's decision as extraordinary tells you everything about what capitalism has done to science. The baseline has shifted so far that basic human decency is now a feel-good story.
