Hurts all of our hearts that Mark is hurting in his eye. What’s so important about this video is that Mom can explain why Mark cannot go to school today- because he needs to become better and understands, even though it hurts. So many times, deaf and hard of hearing kids have no idea why they are missing school. So always explain why, even with minimal sign language, use gestures, use visual cues, or anything that supports understanding while you grow your sign language skills. Speedy recovery to Mark from all of us. We want Mark back to his deaf school soon! 💙 #whyisign #askmewhyisign repost off @uniquelikem3 Explaining to my Deaf son why he has to miss school because of his ulcer in his right eye 🥺 #fy #deaf #americansignlangauge deafkidsrock Video id: Mom and Mark in a hospital room and Mom is repeating reasons why Mark cannot go to school today, but maybe tomorrow because he needs to become better. Mark is upset but knows the reason for missing school. They hug. Got permission from family to share.

I talk a lot about language acquisition with my deaf son on here, but CODA language acquisition is also magical! And a great reminder that bilingualism is a dynamic state, not a checkbox. Transcript: Hi guys. SO I wanted to share a funny story. My 4-year-old is a CODA, ASL is his first language, and when he was small ASL had a strong influence on the way he spoke English. His word choices, syntax, all of that connected back to ASL. But now he's starting to read, and he's thinking a lot about phonics, and I can see English influencing his ASL in kind of funny ways. For example, the other day he was chatting with one of his deaf teachers and he said "oh yeah, my mom "signed me up for camp" but signed SIGN (LANGUAGE) ME UPWARD instead of SIGN a document or sign up. So that was funny. Another one was, he said in English "I'm starving!" but he was sim-comming and said I'm "STAR+HUNGRY!." That one really made me laugh . Anyway, I think these moments are really cute, but I also think they're a good reminder to all of us that "bilingual" doesn't mean two perfect, discreet languages at all times. Those languages can mix, take turns, and their dominance can change over different time periods or even in different situations. And I think that's pretty damn cool. VD: Sara is wearing a blue and white striped shirt, with green glasses and blue and tan hearing aids. They have short hair and are signing ASL. #coda #deafcommunity #ASL #whyisign #signlanguage #languageacquisition #bilingual

Instead of trying to become someone else's voice, best become the microphone. <O/ Transcript: I wanna discuss something that's been popping up in the deaf community recently and it's not unique to us, all marginalized people will recognize this. The word "ally." We see it a lot, but what does it really mean. Well here's the dictionary definition: "One that is associated with another as a helper; a person or group that provides assistance or support in an ongoing effort or struggle." Problem is we often have people showing up and saying, oh, I'm an ally! But their behavior doesn't match. For example, in the book world, we sometimes get hearing writers who say, "Oh I want to include a deaf character for the purpose of "raising awareness." Or sometimes they say "to give voice to the marginalized person. "Raising awareness," "giving voice", these things sound good. They're probably well-intended. But that doesn't make them allyship. If someone really wanted to raise awareness about the deaf community or ASL they would have to be getting people's attention and bringing it BACK to the community, showing them how to interact with the community. Same thing with "giving a voice to". Instead of trying to become someone else's voice, best become the microphone. Amplify the voices we already have. Truth is, it's hard to be an ally because you have to get used to being the second man. In second place, and following the lead (of the marginalized). And that's tough especially for folks who are used to having a lot of privilege. Because they're used to being first! To being prioritized. But allyship really means taking a step into that supportive role...which is in the back. Allyship can also be hard if you're new! And you show up and you're so motivated and ready to help and people say "wait! you need to learn this first. You need to see what we actually need." That can feel frustrating, disappointing, slow. But....that's the work! So I made an ASL rhyme to help remember what allyship is. Ally: help, assist support, amplify. If it's not in the rhyme, it's not allyship! Speaking over, speaking for, making money off of. That's not it!

@thearielseries Did you know it’s Disability Pride Month? On July 26, 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act became a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination based on disability. The Disability Pride flag has a black background representing the mourning and rage for victims of ableist violence and abuse. There are 5 colors that cut across the black background diagonally. The diagonal lines represent cutting across walls and barriers between disability and society and forming light and creativity through the darkness. The red diagonal line represents physical disabilities. The gold diagonal line represents neurodivergence. The white diagonal line represents invisible and undiagnosed disabilities. The blue diagonal line represents psychiatric illnesses. The green diagonal line red presents sensory disabilities. There is an old version of the Disability Pride flag that is not recommended for use. The old version has bolts which may cause a strobing effect on electronic devices, causing potential seizures, dizziness, and other visually triggering effects. Now, Pride often makes people think of LGBTQ+ Pride. Yes, that is true. But they are often intertwined and this is about celebrating/reclaiming visibility because historically, disabled people have been pushed into the shadows and the sides, away from the public space. This month is an important month in celebrating Disability Pride! Video Descriptions: Two people appear in the video with white backgrounds, and one with three stacks of books on floating shelves. The first person to appear is a short-blonde haired person wearing a purple shirt with white lettering that reads, “The future is accessible”. The next person that appears, has short black hair, with a baseball cap worn backwards, and wearing a black shirt with a rainbow sign for “I love you”. Thank you Rogan Shannon for collaborating with us to emulate what Disability Pride month is all about! Then had a thought of why not give it to you raw, straight from the heart, rough draft of my process in creating a visual musical translation. This is an outlet I’d like to get back into after a hiatus due to grad school. It’s a happy place for me and I aim to continue playing with my own creativity. No teams, no edits, no limitations. Just me, myself, and I. Oh, did you hear the whistle at the end? Flashback to a very special moment… I received a name sign! For friends who might not know, receiving a name sign from the Deaf community means that you are seen as a friend/ ally / community advocate. As I continue to work to learn more ASL and check my own privileges, I consider this a huge honor. Thank you @mikeyisjusssayin and @theririshow_tv ❤️❤️ Plus, there really are no words to describe experiencing acts of inclusion and belonging. ❤️🙌🏾🤟🏾 #whyisign #community #learnasl #friends #inclusion
