Legend has it that sweet violets will steal your sense of smell 💜😱👃 Like many legends there is some truth to this tale, as sweet violets only offer up their scent once before it vanishes! This is down to compounds called ionones that give violets their sweet and chalky fragrance. These have a magical effect on our olfactory receptors, invading and numbing the nasal passages and temporarily taking away our sense of smell. Sweet violets are also edible and make a delicious (and magically colour changing🪄✨) infusion for teas, syrups and liquors, though go easy on the picking as these pretty little flowers are on the decline. Not to be confused with the many other species of violet (all of which are edible - including this dog violet prop I’m using here in my garden) none though smells as heavenly as sweet violet, hence its Latin name Viola odorata 🫶🏾💜 #wildfood #foraging #edibleflowers #folklore

Violet season again, full of myth and folklore and one of the most subtle and delicate flavours in nature. Very pretty and very…violet you’ll see them popping up on verges and paths right now. The flowers and the leaves are edible but try not to confuse them with things like lesser Celandine. Can be good for decoration but my favourite thing to do with them is make violet syrup which really does taste and smell like parma violets. I was the only kid who actually liked those. #violets #wildflowers #edibleflowers #springplants

Signaling the True Start of Spring! Wild violets are charming, resilient perennials that often signal the true start of spring. While some lawn enthusiasts view them as stubborn weeds because they spread via underground rhizomes and “hidden” self-pollinating flowers, many gardeners cherish them for their vibrant color and ecological value. They are incredibly hardy and tend to thrive in shady, moist spots where grass might struggle. They can be used in the kitchen and are excellent for pollinators! 🐝 🦋 #WildViolets #Violet #SpringIsHere #WildVioletSyrup

Wildcrafting Wednesday… on a Thursday. We’re rolling with it. Today we’re talking about those tiny purple blooms popping up everywhere right now—violets, of course! 💜 Often overlooked as just another “yard flower,” violets are actually one of the most gentle and versatile plants to work with. Leaves, flowers, fresh or dried—they all have a place in teas, oils, and skincare. If you’ve got them growing nearby, you’ve got a little patch of quiet magic right under your feet. Stay tuned—I’ll show you how I’m putting mine to work! Please remember that none of this is medical advice and you should always do your research and consult with a licensed physician.

Confession: before I understood the importance of native plants I went on a mission to eradicate these “pesky” plants from my flower beds. 🫣 Let me educate you so you don’t make the same mistake as me. Violets make beautiful, low maintenance ground covers. They also make delicious food for us and the butterflies! (I will be picking blooms soon for a VERY limited supply of wild violet jelly) Do you have a shady spot that you could fill in with violets? Your future self will thank you. #wildviolets #plantviolets #dianafritillary

Where nature is allowed to signal the seasons, violets are one of the first signs of spring. Native violets are worthy enough to be the designated state flower in four states (Illinois, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Wisconsin), yet this cheery, low maintenance, pretty, and high wildlife value native plant is targeted by pesticide companies still selling the outdated aesthetic of an ecologically useless and environmentally problematic “perfect” lawn. I’m not a fan of lawns so I don’t have one, but if I did, I’d intentionally make sure to have a living lawn of native plants that included violets! In my part of Georgia, violets host 26 species of butterflies and moths. This puts them in the top ten list in metro-Atlanta according to the National Wildlife Federation site ranking native plants by this metric. Violets are also critical early-spring nectar source for native bees and flies. Rabbits are infrequent visitors to my yard but I know they’ve visited because they just love violets! I’m happy to share because I let violets grow wherever they want. In a natural or rewilded landscape violets along with other native plants function as a living mulch to enrich and protect the soil, suppress weeds, hold moisture, increase biodiversity and connect fragmented habitat. No dyed mulch made from construction and demolition waste needed! Friends of Lost Corner is hosting me on March 28 for a presentation on native container planters and violets are on my list of native plants to consider adding instead of the cliched big box nursery plants. I have them growing in a small pot on my front porch table. Violets are also a natural edging plant and thrive in cracks and crevices. I made this video a couple years ago to show how I intentionally use violets as an edging plant between my driveway and stacked stone retaining wall, and at the bottom of our front porch steps, and back deck steps. #violets #nativeplant #nurturenativenature
