William Wallace is not Braveheart. The King of Scots is - and his heart rests in Melrose Abbey in the Scottish Borders.impress locals with this knowledge when you visit Scotland. For more hints and tips for when you visit Scotland follow me @walkingbonniescotland There’s no disputing that Braveheart is an entertaining movie and story. I’m a huge fan and have used some of it in my Lanark reel. I like a good story. It is however lacking in history facts. Even the name of the movie. Your average viewer and most of Scotland would believe William Wallace to be Braveheart. The “real” Braveheart is in fact King Robert the Bruce. After Robert died, his friend James Douglas took the King’s heart on crusade to honour a wish from Bruce’s deathbed. The crusading Scots only got to Teba, Spain where they fought the Moors. When surrounded with little chance of surviving, James then threw the casket containing Bruce’s heart towards the enemy shouting “Onwards Braveheart, Douglas shall follow thee or die” or something similar. Douglas would die on this battlefield and The King’s brave heart returned to Scotland where it rests in Melrose Abbey. In 1920 it was exhumed, and then buried again without markings. In 1996 during excavations discovered the urn holding the heart of Robert the Bruce. His heart was finally buried within the Abbey ground with the circular marker included in this reel on the east side of the Abbey indicating the final resting place. Melrose Abbey is a mere 50 min walk from Tweedbank train station, a short bus journey or road trip from Edinburgh. It’s a beautiful old ruins and grand Abbey to as well as the historical significance. You can also catch the statue of the movie Braveheart, William Wallace, I featured last week in nearby Dryburgh and the Abbey there too. While I am seeking out history facts about Robert The Bruce and other lesser known Scottish figures, I do not wish to devalue the impact that William Wallace has had. Also, I’m not an historian, just a guy making insta reels so correct me wherever you notice something. #Scotland #Braveheart #battlefield #roadtrip #church #king #reels #insta

On the lowest level of the Glasgow Necropolis, not far from the cathedral, you'll find this wee memorial to Scotland's National Hero - William Wallace. It commemorates an event that you won't find in Braveheart, or even most history books, known as the Battle of the Bell o the Braes. The only reference we have to this Glaswegian conflict comes from Blind Harry's epic poem - "The Wallace" which usually has an accuracy disclaimer. However, even if his work was based purely on oral tradition around 150 years after Wallace’s life, it can't simply be discounted. The Battle of the Bell o the Brae supposedly took place in 1297, shortly after Wallace had burst onto the scene by killing the Sheriff of Lanark along with the town's garrison. The small but growing band of Scots then moved onto bigger things, soon setting their sights on Glasgow Castle. Now demolished, it once stood on the same spot as the Royal Infirmary and in Wallace’s time had a large English garrison of around 1000 men. There were only 300 Scots to face them, a force made even smaller by dividing them into two. As Wallace led 150 up the Bell o the Brae towards the castle, the garrison must have been feeling confident as they marched out to confront them. They hadn't been expecting the Laird of Auchinleck to charge at their rear with the other half of Wallace’s army. This pincer attack caused panic amongst the English and rather than fight on two fronts against an unknown number, they fled Glasgow and ran the 9 miles or so to safety at Bothwell. It was a great victory for the Scots and would have bolstered Wallace’s reputation on the road to Stirling Bridge. Whether the Battle of the Bell o the Brae happened exactly as Blind Harry claims will probably be debated forever, but there's no reason to doubt that Wallace led his men against Glasgow Castle. Thanks to this monument, at least more visitors and residents of Glasgow will be aware of this little known nugget of Scottish history! #Scotland #ScotlandisNow #VisitScotland #SimplyScotland #yourscotland #WilliamWallace #Braveheart #ScottishHistory

William Wallace's MUM is buried here 😱 Dunfermline is a city where Scotland’s story truly begins. Once the ancient capital of Scotland, this historic city is layered with royal power, quiet beauty, and a deep sense of national identity. I was lucky enough to be shown around by friend, local expert, and photographer David Wardle, whose knowledge brought every street and stone to life. Dunfermline doesn’t shout — it resonates. 🏴✨ ✅ Royal importance: Dunfermline was the burial place of Scottish kings and queens, including Robert the Bruce, whose tomb lies within Dunfermline Abbey. ✅ Dunfermline Abbey & Palace stand at the heart of the city — once the spiritual centre of medieval Scotland and a residence of monarchs. ✅ Birthplace of Andrew Carnegie, the industrialist and philanthropist whose legacy shaped libraries, education, and culture across the world. ✅ Green spaces like Pittencrieff Park (The Glen) offer peaceful walks, dramatic views, and a reminder of how nature and history intertwine here. This is a city that shaped Scotland — politically, culturally, and globally — yet still feels grounded, welcoming, and proudly local. 🗓 Best time to visit: Spring through autumn for walks and light — or winter, when the Abbey feels especially atmospheric. Have you explored Dunfermline yet? Save this post and tag who you’d take to discover one of Scotland’s most important — and underrated — cities. 📍 Dunfermline #dunfermline #scotland #lovescotland #scottishhistory #hiddenScotland

This scene makes almost every man cry… When the sequence was originally written, screenwriter Randall Wallace had Murron give William a rose. However, an early reader of the script pointed out that the rose—long associated with England—felt out of place in a story so rooted in Scottish identity. Wallace agreed, and the rose was replaced with a thistle, the national symbol of Scotland. Later in the film, there’s a moment where William gives something back to Murron. Wallace admitted that he initially wasn’t sure what the object should be, until he remembered the thistle from the earlier scene. Reusing it not only made symbolic sense, but also added emotional continuity between the characters. Mel Gibson has openly acknowledged that Braveheart takes major liberties with historical fact, arguing that many changes were made purely for dramatic effect rather than accuracy. He also confessed that he always felt he was at least ten years too old for the role of William Wallace, though the emotional core of the character mattered more to him than strict realism. Additionally, historians have long noted that while the film amplified Scottish nationalism and helped revive global interest in Scottish history, it blended myth with fact to such an extent that it became more of a legend than a biography. Still, the movie’s powerful themes, cinematography, and performances helped it win five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.
