_AIt’s 5:30 PM. You were about to log off.
Now your manager drops something that hijacks your entire evening.
Here’s what not to say even if it’s what you’re thinking:
❌ “Seriously? You’re telling me this now?”
👉🏾 Frustration might feel justified, but it reads as emotional and unprofessional. That label sticks.
❌ “Okay, I’ll get it done.”
👉🏾 This is how you become the default firefighter. You don’t get rewarded for absorbing chaos. You just get more of it.
Here’s what to say instead:
✅ “I can prioritize this. To meet that deadline, I’ll need to pause Project X. Are you okay with that trade-off?”
👉🏾 You’re not refusing. You’re clarifying consequences. You’re shifting the decision back to them.
✅ “I can send a rough draft tomorrow morning. A fully polished version would be ready Wednesday. Which do you prefer?”
👉🏾 Speed and quality compete. You’re making that explicit so expectations are managed upfront.
✅ “I’m fully committed to Client Y tonight. Is this new request a higher priority, or can it wait?”
👉🏾 This reframes the moment as resource allocation — not a personal complaint.
✅ “I’m offline tonight, but I can start first thing tomorrow and have it to you by 11 AM. Does that work?”
👉🏾 You’re setting a boundary and still offering a solution. Real urgency survives clarity.
The reality:
When you respond like this, one of two things usually happens:
• They realize it wasn’t truly urgent.
• Or they consciously deprioritize something else.
Either way, you’re no longer sacrificing your evenings for avoidable fire drills.
