Enabling two-factor authentication (2FA) on Instagram is a great way to secure your account.
Here’s how you can set it up:
✅Open the Instagram app and tap the profile icon in the bottom-right corner.
✅Tap the three-line menu icon in the top-right corner and select Account centre
✅Go to password and security and choose Two-Factor Authentication.
✅You’ll have four methods to choose from:
1. Authentication App (recommended): This method uses an app like Google Authenticator or Authy to generate the 2FA codes.
2. Text Message: This method sends the 2FA codes to your phone via SMS.
3. WhatsApp code
4. Additional methods
For the Authentication App method:
Toggle on Authentication App.
If you don’t have one, you’ll be prompted to download an authenticator app.
Follow the instructions to set up the app with Instagram, which will involve copying a setup key into the authenticator app.
For the Text Message and WhatsApp method:
Simply select the option to receive codes via text message and follow the prompts to add your phone number.
Remember, using an authenticator app is generally more secure than text messages1. Once you’ve set up 2FA, you’ll need to enter the code from your chosen method every time you log in to Instagram on a new device. Stay safe! 🛡️

Two factor authentication:
- Typically a password + phone code
- Requires exactly two ways to verify you
- Most common security you use every day
Multi-factor authentication:
- Combines biometrics, tokens, and passwords
- Blocks over 99% of malicious login attempts
- Must use 3+ authentication factors
The thing is...
Adding more factors doesn’t mean better security.
A well implemented 2FA setup can be more secure than a poorly implemented MFA every time.

Two factor authentication (2FA) is a must on all your financial accounts but if you are getting those code verification messages by text message, you are putting yourself at risk. SMS, or Simple Messaging System (think green bubble), is insecure. It’s not encrypted and sent as plaintext.
Bloomberg and Lighthouse Reports shared an investigation in which a million text messages with 2FA codes were visible to a Swiss telecom company - Fink Telecom Services in June 2023. These messages often have the code as well as the sender and recipient. With all the hacked data out there, it’s not difficult to put together a profile and potentially gain access.
You should be using an authenticator app, which rotates codes every 30-60 seconds, such as the Google Authenticator app (free). It’s far more secure than text messages anyone can intercept.

→ Login, password, OTP, biometrics, tokens.
🛂 Authorization answers: What are you allowed to do?
→ Roles, permissions, scopes, access policies.
You can be authenticated but still not authorized.
(Logged in ≠ allowed to access everything.)
Most real-world security failures don’t happen because of weak passwords —
they happen because access boundaries are poorly designed.
