LULufthansa Boeing 747 Business Class upper deck vs lower deck. Which one do you prefer?
Lufthansa’s Boeing 747 features 8 open First Class suites, 80 Business Class flat-bed seats with 180 degrees recline, 32 Premium Economy recliner seats, and 244 standard Economy Class seats. The 80 Business Class seats are spread over three cabins:
- The largest Business Class cabin is located on the lower deck (behind First Class) and features 6 rows of 36 seats, arranged in a 2-2-2 layout.
- The smallest Business Class cabin is also located on the lower deck – separated from the larger Business Class cabin by a galley – and features only 2 rows of 12 seats, also arranged in a 2-2-2 layout.
- The upper deck features a third Business Class cabin with 8 rows of 32 seats, arranged in a 2-2 layout. Due to the 2-2 layout (contrary to the 2-2-2 layout on the lower deck), this cabin has a more intimate feel and is the best Business Class cabin. It almost feels a bit like flying in a private plane. The window seats here also have more storage space (with extra bins on the side) compared to the lower deck Business Class seats.

We booked this as part of a Manchester-Frankfurt-Newark-Louisville itinerary. It was 66,880 points + $353 through Avianca LifeMiles, but a 15% transfer bonus from Capital One made it only 58,200 points! The high fees on our particular route was due to the UK’s very high departure taxes ✈️
The best way to book this experience is through Air Canada Aeroplan from the east coast to Frankfurt. The rate will be only 60k points + $55 (the reverse would be around $200 due to Germany’s departure taxes). You can transfer points from AMEX, Chase, & Capital One 1:1 to Aeroplan 💳
Lufthansa generally has a good amount of business class availability. But if you wait until ~1 month before departure, open seats are released to partners like Air Canada 🗓️
The airline is one of the few around the world that still operate the 747, and it can be found on routes to/from FRA to/from BOS, EWR, JFK, IAD, MIA, IAH, ORD, LAX, SFO, YYZ, and YVR 🗺️
You can also book Singapore Airlines “fifth freedom” route JFK-FRA for 60k points - which is one of the BEST experiences for a transatlantic flight🥂
Other options to get to Europe through Aeroplan include United, Brussels, TAP Portugal, SWISS, Austrian, LOT, and Turkish 🤝
Air Canada’s partner redemptions are set by zones, so east coast to western Europe will be 60k in business but longer routes like Chicago to Europe will be 70k 📍

DOHere’s a quick tour of the crew areas of the Boeing 777F. We start at the entry door where you see the galley and lounge area for crew on break and any guest riders. They’re technically called “Supernumerary” seats. Then the first door I open are the 2 bunks. You’ll see duffel bags with clean linens and a case of water, but these are removed when we make up the bunks. The second door I open is lav (restroom). Again, good size.
