CAThis is one of the most unique roadside attractions in all of California!
Exit 239 on I-15 N has the strangest road sign in the entire state!
If you take Zzyzx Rd down a 5 mile dirt path, it leads to a little oasis with a weird history.
In the 1940s, this was home to a “medical“ resort spa founded by a discredited charlatan by the name of Curtis Springer.
Story has it that he came up with the name Zzyzx because he wanted to have the last word in the English dictionary.
The property now belongs to the Cal State University system and functions as a desert studies facility under the care of the National Park Service.
At the end of the road, you will find a peaceful little pond surrounded by dozens of palm trees.
It’s an easy 0.4 mile hike around the pond known as Lake Tuendae.
If you’re looking for a quick roadside stop on a long drive to Las Vegas, this makes a perfect detour.
It’s free to visit and free to park from sunrise to sunset. And, there are picnic tables in the parking lot area with restrooms.
