NIMay I present our Twin Plug 3.2L Short Stroke Porsche 911 rebuild, ready to install in our ‘78 911SC just in time to get to Monterey.
Prompted by broken head studs, @frankjohnson_814 and I started this project on April 28, ripping this numbers matching original motor from the 911 with the goal of rebuilding it by Monterey Car Week. It quickly morphed into a little hot rod as we slid down that Porsche slippery slope🤣
To say this is an ambitious schedule is an understatement. We have over 700 hours into this project to this point, doing all the work and machining ourselves in our 3-car garage, with the exception of sending the crankshaft out for knife edging, the heads out for valve guides, and the alternator fan and housing out along with various hardware for refinishing.
It’s also our first flat six, first engine we’ve done together, and first time we didn’t kill each other doing a big project 😉

NITwo months of footage, categorizing the content, picking out key moments… no wonder it took me a week to edit the first phase of assembling the 911 case. Was it worth it? I still have a lot more progress to share, but I really wanted to show you the process of rebuilding our 911 engine, or as much as I could in 90 seconds.
The “big day” was a huge milestone moment when we actually began final assembly of the case. Most people likely don’t realize how many times you have to test fit for bearing clearances, IMS gear backlash, cylinder clearance, etc etc. Plus Frank twin plugged the heads in this time, and that’s not shown here.
@frankjohnson_814 has worked his butt off to get this done in time for Monterey Car Week. We’ll have the 911 on display with @bilsteinus at Werks Reunion, and we’ll be hanging out with @griotsgarage at Laguna Seca!

NILoop this all day, my friends. The 911 is so much fun to shift! With close ratio gears 2-4, a limited slip differential, a higher revving 3.2L short stroke twin plug carbureted motor, and all the air-cooled glory that the flat six is, this is a dreamy car to drive. ❤️
