LI🏫💰 Alexandria City Public Schools Proposes $340M Capital Budget Over Next Decade!
ACPS presented a Capital Improvement Program allocating over $340 million for projects from 2027-2036, with $149 million dedicated to addressing the district’s growing student population.
🔥 Major Capacity Projects: ✅ Cora Kelly School overhaul: $105M (expand to 720 seats, 1950s building) ✅ Jefferson-Houston becomes 850-seat middle school: $30.2M (adds 400 students) ✅ Patrick Henry renovated to K-5 school: $9.4M ✅ Chance for Change program leased space: $5M ✅ Projects have 30-50 year expected lifespan

🏗️ Timeline & Process:
Cora Kelly design phase slated for 2028, construction begins 2029. This proposal is $51 million more than City Council-approved 2026-2035 budget and comes during expected citywide budget cuts. ACPS maintains proposal “reflects commitment to fiscal responsibility” but notes “middle school capacity continues to be a challenge.”
Superintendent Melanie Kay-Wyatt: “Our aging school buildings are being transformed into safe, welcoming and modern learning environments. Investing in our facilities extends beyond the school day, creating spaces the Alexandria City community can share, enjoy and take pride in together.”
Final School Board vote: December 18.

7NREST IN PEACE 🙏🙏 The student who reportedly overdosed in a bathroom at Wakefield High School in Arlington earlier this week died in the hospital Thursday, @arlingtonvapd said.
"Every single one of you knew that this day would come," PTSA President Judith Davis said to the Arlington County School Board Thursday night.
Davis identified the student as Sergio Flores.
