Trendy ADHD vs Real ADHD. A lot of people like to joke about having ADHD because they’re forgetful, or hyper or talkative, etc. but the reality is that those are superficial stereotypes that stem from so much more under the surface. ADHD is a complex, neurodevelopmental condition that runs far deeper than a quirky personality trait, or getting distracted easily. First of all I'd like to make clear that this reel isn’t about gatekeeping or attacking anyone! It’s purely about highlighting the very real, often invisible struggles that people with ADHD face every day. For many of us, ADHD means emotional dysregulation, executive dysfunction, paralysis, burnout and a lifetime of “not living up to your potential” and not knowing why. The “fun and bouncy” version of ADHD can be valid for some, especially in children or in certain presentations, but reducing ADHD to a stereotype makes it harder for others to be taken seriously, access support or get a diagnosis. I want to keep normalising the full picture without minimising anyone’s experience. Whether you’re diagnosed, self-identifying, or supporting someone with ADHD, you’re welcome here! This is a safe space where I regularly remind us all of the nuance that comes with ADHD, and where I aim to keep it real. #adhdawareness #neurodiversity #realadhd #adhdsupport #mentalhealthmatters #executivedysfunction #adhdinadults #adhdeducation #neurodivergentvoices #adhdreality #emotionalregulation #adhdacceptance #adhdtherapist #therapistwithadhd #talkingtherapy

I didn’t even realize it was ADHD. I thought I was just bad at life. Too emotional. Too inconsistent. Too lazy sometimes, too intense other times. I thought everyone cried over small things. Everyone overthought texts. Everyone felt exhausted from just existing. I didn’t know it was dopamine. Or masking. Or emotional dysregulation. I just thought it was me. Finding out it was ADHD didn’t make me weak. It finally made my life make sense. If you’re still blaming yourself for patterns you can’t seem to fix, my ADHD Naturally Treatment Guide was made for women like us. (It’s in my bi0)🎁

ADHD isn’t broken focus.
It’s a brain trying to survive information overload.👇 If you have ADHD, your brain doesn’t calmly go
“this matters” → keep
“this doesn’t” → discard. Instead, everything shows up at the same volume. The main idea.
A side note.
A random example.
A sentence that might be important. All equally loud. So highlighting isn’t really about emphasis.
It’s triage. Your brain going:
“Please… just let me remember something.” Here’s the part most people don’t understand:
ADHD is closely tied to limited working memory. Which creates this constant background fear while reading:
“If I don’t mark this now, it’s gone.” Highlighting also sneaks in a dopamine hit:
• a small physical action
• instant visual feedback
• the feeling of progress So you end up:
✔️ highlighting most of the page
✔️ feeling productive
✔️ finishing the chapter
❌ remembering almost nothing That’s not laziness.
That’s a coping strategy. If highlighting feels automatic, don’t try to stop it - contain it. What works better for ADHD brains: 1️⃣ The one-sentence rule
After a paragraph, write ONE sentence in your own words.
No highlighting until that sentence exists. 2️⃣ Question-based highlighting
Only mark text that answers:
“Why does this matter?”
“How would I explain this to someone else?” 3️⃣ Color = function (not vibes)
🟡 definition
🔵 example
🔴 test-relevant If you can’t explain why it’s highlighted… don’t highlight it. But also don’t feel bad for highlighting a bit more..that’s just how your brain works 💙

Which one are you? Let me know in the comments! There are three types of ADHD: hyperactive, inattentive, and combined.
ADHD affects how we show up in friendships in different ways. Hyperactive ADHD is more likely to show up as talking a lot, oversharing, or feeling “too intense,” while inattentive ADHD often looks like forgetting to reply, zoning out in conversations, or being labeled as distant. Both are about regulation, not how much you care. — This is part of a 5-video series comparing hyperactive w/ inattentive ADHD to raise awareness about how ADHD can show up differently; a fun break from my normal educational content since we’re in the holiday void and I don’t want to stress you (or myself) out. Follow so you don’t miss the next one, and in early January I’ll be back to the current series: ADHD Girl Systems. 👋 I’m Chris — 3 years with an ADHD coach changed my life, so I built @shimmer.care to help thousands of ADHDers do the same.
