BUAfter World War One Germany faced economic hardship and uncertainty. In the middle of this difficult period, Adi Dassler focused on a simple goal. He wanted to build a better shoe. Working by hand in his mother’s laundry room, he believed performance could be engineered.
He experimented constantly with materials and designs. Rubber from old tires and hand hammered spikes became part of his early prototypes. Every athlete he met received a pair to test. Some ideas failed, but each attempt helped him improve the design further.
The turning point arrived during the nineteen thirty six Olympics. Jesse Owens wore Dassler’s custom shoes while competing. His incredible performance and four gold medals brought global attention to the brand that would later become Adidas and change the sports world forever.
Behind the success there was also conflict. Tension between Adi and his brother Rudolf eventually divided the family. Rudolf left and created Puma, starting one of the most famous rivalries in sportswear history and shaping the global athletic industry for decades.
