DRRecurrent Ankle Twist – Why Does It Keep Happening? Expert Advice by Dr Lalit Bafna
Many patients visit us in the OPD complaining that their ankle keeps twisting again and again. Usually, there is a history of a first ankle sprain 6 months or 1 year back. After that, the patient often feels that the ankle gives way in certain positions — especially while walking on uneven surfaces, running, or jumping. 🦶
The most common reason behind this is injury to a ligament called the Anterior Talofibular Ligament (ATFL). This ligament connects the fibula bone to the talus bone and plays a very important role in maintaining ankle stability.
When the ankle twists for the first time, the ATFL ligament may get torn. In many cases, it heals only partially. Because of incomplete healing, the ankle becomes unstable, leading to recurrent episodes of twisting.
If you are experiencing:
• Repeated ankle sprains
• Difficulty walking on uneven ground
• Fear while running or jumping
• Inability to return to sports level
You may be suffering from chronic ankle instability.
Most patients can be treated conservatively with proper rehabilitation, strengthening exercises, and balance training. However, in certain cases where instability persists, ATFL ligament reconstruction surgery may be required. After reconstruction, the ankle becomes stable and sports performance improves significantly. 💪
If you are facing recurrent ankle twisting and are not comfortable with your activity level, proper evaluation is important.
