For the past two years, veterinarians and healthcare professionals have been asking the AVMA, an organization with direct access to Congress, to raise awareness about the humanitarian, animal, and environmental catastrophe in Palestine. Doctors hold a unique ethical responsibility to recognize and speak out against preventable harm. Yet when one of their own, Dr. Mu’ath Abu Rukba, went missing eleven days ago, the public and the animal-care community pleaded for the AVMA to help raise awareness and use its political connections to assist. There has been no public acknowledgment, no transparency, and no communication with the community it represents. Yesterday it was confirmed that Dr. Mu’ath Abu Rukba was killed by the Israeli army while returning to what was left of his home during a cease-fire. I’ve requested an interview with Dr. Bailey to address these concerns directly. The animal-care community, and the public, deserve to be heard by the organization.

The American Veterinary Medical Association House of Delegates — the group that decides the AVMA’s declawing policy — won’t fully condemn declawing, even though many of its members are connected to clinics that still perform and profit from it. In simple terms: The people making the rules are tied to the very procedure being addressed — and that’s a clear conflict of interest while cats continue to suffer from this barbaric animal cruelty. I was fortunate to connect with long-time colleagues, like my anatomy lab partner from my first year of vet school (now the Chief Veterinary Officer of Vetcor), Dr. Michelle Shoemaker, and had the opportunity to meet new people, including several future veterinary leaders at the Diversify Veterinary Medicine Coalition travel grant recipient reception. I’m always struck by the passion at these events that bring our profession together. Whether watching Associates from our Mars Veterinary Health practices deliver CE sessions, meeting with veterinary school deans who are shaping the veterinary professionals of tomorrow, or chatting with other veterinary leaders about how we can better support veterinary teams, patients, and pet owners as our work and the world around us evolves, I was reminded that we’re at our best as a profession when we come together and work toward common goals.
