MEDon’t know where to start? Here are 5 things you can do to get started:
Never let your degree define your what you do! I graduated in fine arts (textiles/apparel design) back in undergrad — like many others, I followed the traditional path and moved to nyc to work in fashion — bc that’s what most people do, right?
But I found myself feeling unsatisfied with the work and the impact I was making. I realized I enjoyed creating my digital portfolio website more than the textiles work itself. So, I decided to switch gears and pursue a career in product design in tech.
🌼 My transition:
1. Know what I’m getting into — I reached out to designers to learn about what their day to day tasks look like
2. Skills development — Binge-watched lots of @femkedotdesign ‘s video, read medium articles, completed my 100 days UI challenge, “Figma Learn” has a lot of great resources
3. Crafting my portfolio — I volunteered at a very early stage startup to work on one of the feature improvements then went to a year program at @uwmhcid
🌼 Don’t know where to start? Here are 5 things you can do to get started:
1. Research the field and connect with professionals already working in it try @joinadplist or just cold dm on linkedin
2. Take online courses and tutorials to build relevant skills @femkedotdesign or @memorisely
3. Start small projects to build your portfolio. The market has a lot of talents so figure out what makes you stand out is it prototyping? presenting? researching?
4. Join communities and attend events to network. Try @luma_hq or @eventbrite for local events
5. Apply for internships or volunteer to gain practical experience.
