NUThe quarter-final first leg of the UEFA Champions League between Sporting CP and Arsenal FC ended 1–0 in favour of Arsenal, with the decisive moment coming deep in added time at the Estádio José Alvalade in Lisbon. It was a tight, tactical game for much of the 90 minutes, with both sides creating chances but neither able to find the breakthrough until late. Arsenal’s goalkeeper David Raya made several important saves to keep the score level and earned praise as one of the standout performers.
The winner came in the 91st minute through substitute Kai Havertz, who finished from close range after good link-up play from Gabriel Martinelli. The goal was calm and clinical, providing Arsenal with a valuable away lead to take back to the Emirates Stadium for the second leg. The late strike snapped a draw and gave Arsenal momentum after recent setbacks in domestic competitions.
Sporting started brightly and looked dangerous at times — the hosts hit the woodwork in the first half and had threatening moments on the break — but were ultimately unable to convert chances into goals. Arsenal showed discipline and defensive organisation for much of the match, even without some key players unavailable through injury. The narrow win sets Arsenal up well for the return leg at home, where they’ll aim to secure overall progression to the Champions League semi-finals.
