SAI went to AutoNation Chevrolet in Pembroke Pines ready to buy a used car. I negotiated directly with the salesperson, and we shook hands THREE separate times on the agreed price. Everything felt solid. We had a deal.
As we were wrapping up — after closing time — the sales manager, Tino, walks over with his arms crossed, staring at me, and says, “So how are we gonna do this?”
Naturally, I assumed he meant payment method since it was late and they were closing. I told him, “I’m paying cash.”
The moment I said that, his entire tone changed. He immediately said, “No, we’re not doing the deal.”
I reminded him that I had already agreed on the price with his salesperson — who was standing right there — and that we had literally shaken hands three times.
His response?
“Yeah, but you didn’t shake MY hand.”
I had never even met him before that moment.
So apparently the handshake only counts if it’s the manager’s hand — not the person actually negotiating the deal with you from the beginning.
Suddenly the deal was off because I wasn’t financing. At no point prior did anyone ask how I planned to pay. If they had, I would have told them upfront that I was paying cash.
But once they realized they wouldn’t make money on financing, the agreed price no longer stood.
Forcing financing after a handshake deal?
Refusing to honor an agreed price because the buyer is paying cash?
That’s not “one price.” That’s selective policy.
Buyers — pay attention to how the tone changes the moment you say the word “cash.”

SOI just wanted to share an update on this…and some take aways:
The dealership apologized (it was their surveillance company who called the Pinellas Park police department)
Since originally posting this, the Pinellas Park PD did call and apologize, and I had a great conversation with the sargeant that I spoke with
I also got a direct message from a friend saying “welcome to my world”. He shared a couple of heartbreaking stories of what has happened to him in the past (way worse than this)
He also filled me in on “the talk” that his dad had with him early on…IYKYK, very sad but true
It helped me have more empathy toward others who have experienced similar (and worse) things (also innocent) but often for other reasons
And I guess if we ever leave our vehicle at AutoNation Toyota again, there’s very little chance it will get stolen 😂
Sympathetic nervous system was definitely activated…
