What kept me moving was my commitment to myself, my commitment to the training, sticking with my plan and my commitment to being where my feet were—one step at a time, over and over and over. And this moment right here—this finish, this celebration, this flood of emotion, the cheers and joy of victory—this, this was the payoff of a lifetime. It was worth every single step. I appreciate you, and I want you to know I tried. I wanted to take care of myself like I did before Sept. 19. I wanted to wake up and dominate my strength training program by @toddanderson42_ I wanted to run 10 miles next to (but really behind) Cody on my @teamrideoutstrong marathon training runs. I wanted to sleep. Oh I promise you I wanted to sleep. I wanted to sleep and not wake up in a cold sweat from nightmares that my legs didn’t move. I wanted to play kickball and football and take my vitamins every day. I wanted to journal and read and drink water and get in my ice bath. Maybe shower more than once a week. Then one day Cody tried brushing his teeth on his own, and the next day he put his t-shirt on by himself. He combs his hair. He feeds himself. He flosses his teeth, you guys! It felt like I had hours of free time. In perfect timing, I became a volunteer for the @alldayrunningco Workout365 program, and after the first jumping jack, Cody said, “Oh I’m excited! This is gonna be good for my mental health to watch you do all the things I’m gonna do again soon!” He read me the workouts, counted my reps, and it won’t surprise you that he’s the biggest cheerleader there ever was. @alldayrunningco launched their membership today. For allllll the DM’s asking where I find these crazy half marathons — Driveway to Hell, Hell on the Hill — this is it. HEAR THIS THOUGH: this is more than a daily workout and a running retreat. This is a community. A community of incredible humans who have wrapped their arms around us. Some of them have become family. Some of them beautiful internet friends. Some of them I’ve not actually met, but we’ve shared the climb of the driveway or the hill, and therefore we are kindred spirits. They are in my DM’s EVERY DAY checking on us, cheering us on and telling us they can’t wait to stand next to Cody at the start line of the next event. They’re special people. They’re my people.
