BUAfter more than 53 years since Apollo 17, NASA has successfully launched Artemis II, the first crewed mission toward the Moon in over five decades. On April 1, 2026, the powerful Space Launch System (SLS) rocket lifted off from Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 6:35 p.m. EDT, carrying four brave astronauts on an epic journey.
The Crew Commander Reid Wiseman, Pilot Victor Glover, Mission Specialist Christina Koch from NASA, and Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen. This 10-day test flight will take them on a free-return trajectory around the Moon flying farther from Earth than any humans have ever been to test the Orion spacecraft’s systems in deep space before future landings.
This historic launch marks the beginning of a new era in space exploration. Artemis II paves the way for Artemis III, which aims to put humans back on the lunar surface, and eventually sends us toward Mars. Humanity is once again reaching for the stars.

Artemis II is a 10-day crewed mission scheduled for April 2026, targeting a "free-return" trajectory around the Moon. The Orion spacecraft will launch from Florida, perform high-Earth orbit checkouts, execute a translunar injection, fly by the far side of the Moon in a figure-eight, and splash down in the Pacific Ocean
Key Flight Path Phases:
Launch & Earth Orbit (Day 1): Launched by the SLS rocket, Orion will initially enter a high elliptical orbit around Earth to conduct systems checkouts.
Translunar Injection (Day 2): Orion will fire its Service Module engine to leave Earth orbit and begin the 4-day journey to the Moon.
Lunar Flyby (Day 6): The crew will pass around the far side of the Moon, with their closest approach bringing them from the surface.
Return Trip (Days 7-10): Following a "free-return" trajectory—a figure-eight loop that uses gravity to return them without needing additional fuel—the spacecraft will head back toward Earth.
Reentry & Splashdown (Day 10): The mission concludes with a high-speed reentry through Earth's atmosphere, landing in the Pacific Ocean off the California coast
