How long does a backdraught take? 👀 Let's time it to see how many seconds it will take for this fireball to burst out of this shed once the hatches are opened... 🔥 A backdraught is a ventilation induced event that occurs when a fire deprived of oxygen (such as this one in a compartment) is exposed to a larger amount of oxygen (when the door opens). Released on this day in 1991: Backdraft 🎬 Real fire was used — no CGI. The fire scenes were done practically, with controlled burns and real pyrotechnics. The flames were choreographed like actors. Fire was treated as a “living character” by the filmmakers. Kurt Russell, William Baldwin, and others underwent training with the Chicago Fire Department to get the physicality and terminology right. Brad Pitt auditioned for William Baldwin’s role. Donald Sutherland’s character was inspired by a real arsonist. His creepy portrayal of arsonist Ronald Bartel was loosely inspired by real-life firebugs and serial arsonists. The film coined the term “backdraft” for the public. Most people had never heard the term before — it’s when a fire explodes violently due to sudden oxygen exposure. The film made it infamous. Las llamas pueden desaparecer, pero el fuego 𝒏𝒐 𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒂 𝒂𝒑𝒂𝒈𝒂𝒅𝒐. En su lugar, el ambiente queda lleno de 𝒈𝒂𝒔𝒆𝒔 𝒄𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒔 𝒚 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒃𝒖𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒃𝒍𝒆𝒔 (como monóxido de carbono y vapores no quemados) producidos por la descomposición de los materiales. No hay un tiempo fijo. Puede suceder 𝒆𝒏 𝒇𝒓𝒂𝒄𝒄𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒆𝒔 𝒅𝒆 𝒔𝒆𝒈𝒖𝒏𝒅𝒐 después de que entra el oxígeno, porque los gases ya estaban listos para arder. 📘 ¿De dónde viene el término?
