Try making your own backpacking meals in 2025!👇🏼 I’ve been making our backpacking meals for the past three years and I honestly LOVE it. It’s so fun to be able tot try out new recipes, be able to customize flavors to what we like, and to be able to change portion sizes based on how many calories we need!! I was really intimidated to try this for a long time. It seemed like it was going to be really difficult and complicated, but it’s actually far easier than I ever expected. The cool thing is that you can really dehydrate most meals you’d make at home and just bring your leftovers into the backcountry! Here’s a full list of what I’d buy to get started: • dehydrator (we use the one by @hamiltonbeach) • plastic trays or parchment paper • Mylar bags (@harvest_right) • ziplock bags • @stasherbag • @seatosummit alpha pot (to cook at camp) • food cozy My biggest advice is to start easy and work your way up. Google has SO many great easy recipes. Honestly I’d start with a pasta with a veggie and chicken because there can be very little grease and it will rehydrate well! if you’re dipping your toes into dehydrating your backpacking meals, pasta variations is a great place to start! here’s what I did: •boil noodles as you would normally •allow them to completely cool, then put them on your dehydrator! *this step makes them rehydrate real quick on the trail* •add all the veggies to the dehydrator trays •spread out the marinara sauce on parchment paper on the top dehydrator tray •dehydrate at 140°F for 10 hours •take all the veggies and noodles off and allow them to cool. store in an airtight container until the week you’re ready to eat them •put the marinara sauce in the food processor and pulse until it’s broken up. dehydrate for an additional 4(ish) hours •add in all your spices to a small bag •when you’re ready to hit the trail, add all the ingredients to a biodegradable sandwich bag like @holdonbags •add in either pepperoni or summer sausage to the bag at the last minute for extra protein On the trail - •boil water and add ingredients to the pot. let sit for 10 minutes to save fuel and enjoy!! what dehydrating food questions do you have?! Full recipe 👇🏼 Save this for future reference! We have been promising more dehydrated backpacking meals, so here they come! This one is a take on a popular freeze dried backpacking meal, but made at home, cheaper, (and more delicious?!). It’s filled with protein and turned out to be amazing on our Mt Whitney trip! You’ll need: (4-5 servings) • 1 lb ground turkey • 1/2 onion - diced • 1 jalapeño - sliced small • 1 can black beans • 1 can pinto beans • 1 can tomato sauce • 1 can diced tomatoes • 1 can corn • small amount of chicken broth • 3 cups macaroni noodles • 2 mac and cheese cheese packets • seasonings: (to taste) salt, pepper, paprika, garlic powder, cayenne Recipe: (At home) 1. Sauté onion and jalapeño (if you can do this without oil, or just a tiny bit, even better) 2. Add the ground turkey and grind it into small pieces 3. Season the turkey and cook until brown 4. Add beans, corn, tomatoes and sauce to the pot, and stir. 5. Add macaroni pasta and cheese to the pot, add chicken broth just to cover the pasta (enough to cook it), stir, cover, and let cook for 13 minutes (or what pasta box says) 6. Remove from heat, and start assembling on dehydrator. Add parchment paper to each tray, and then cover with a thin layer of the pasta. Make sure each piece is as small as possible to dehydrate evenly. 7. Turn on dehydrator to 150 degrees for 12 hours. 8. Stir occasionally and move trays around based on which are dehydrating faster/slower. 9. When it’s done (when you can’t feel any moisture), compile into 4 or 5 freezer quart zip lock bags. (At camp) 1. Boil water 2. Place bag into food cozy 3. Add boiling water just to cover the food in the bag and stir. 4. Close and let sit for 10-15 minutes, stirring every few. 5. I have Hashimoto’s and Celiac Disease, so as a result, I don’t touch gluten as it causes a gigantic flare-up for me. Unfortunately this has caused many miserable trips trying to keep it together through severe hangry-ness, feeling like I wanted to eat anything in sight after delays, and one time literally eating just lettuce when I couldn’t find suitable food in an airport. So, after a decade of being GF, I will NOT travel without these 6 things: ✅ Gluten Enzymes - While these don’t give you a free pass to eat gluten, they do seem to work well to counter any possible cross-contamination. We take these after any meals we are even the slightest bit worried about while traveling. ✅Fruit bars - if you DO run into some hangry-ness, a little hit of sugar from an all-natural source like fruit can be a lifesaver. ✅ Beef Jerky - because of the protein, these are quite filling. ✅ Backpacking Meals - These are lifesavers for delays or small airports that don’t have a single gluten-free option. Just pour hot water into the pack, wait a few minutes, and voila, you’ve got a full meal. (Good to Go Makes great GF options, and Wild Zora has both Paleo and AIP options) ✅ Probiotics - These help keep me regular and it doesn’t hurt to have a little extra help when being stuck on airplanes with potentially sick people. (I take Seed, but many options are great) ✅ Digestive Enzymes with HcL - The stress of travel, different foods than we’re used to, and varied sleeping patterns all contribute to lower stomach acid. This often causes constipation, bloating, and heart burn - so to avoid this, I take some of these with meals to counteract that. Being prepared can really make the difference between feeling great and feeling miserable, so I hope these tips will help! Do you need an EASY upgrade to your backpacking meals? DEHYDRATED VEGETABLES. add them to pretty much any meal and not only does it add nutrition but also taste! Lately my dehydrator is running around the clock and I'm loving it. So much fun and soooo easy! Ramen is a favorite. Easy, cheap and lightweight but often kinda skimpy on the veggies and some don't have any. But that's an easy fix. Dehydrate your own. Pro tip: add the veggies to the water as you boil bc they take a lot longer to rehydrate than the ramen. By the time you add your ramen the veggies are almost there making it perfect timing.
