SW“Okay girls, which goes better, the silver chain or the pearls?”) is from The Golden Girls Season 3, Episode 20: “And Ma Makes Three”.
This classic scene happens early in the episode when Dorothy (Bea Arthur) enters the living room holding up two necklaces to accessorize her outfit for a date. She asks Rose (Betty White) and Blanche (Rue McClanahan) for their opinions, leading to their hilariously savage, back-and-forth roasts of her appearance:
• Rose picks the chain.
• Blanche calls it an amateur mistake, saying the chain accentuates Dorothy’s “turkey-like neck.”
• Rose counters that pearls highlight her “nonexistent bosom.”
• Blanche adds that the chain draws the eye lower to the “huge spare tire” over her “square manly hips.”
• Dorothy snaps, “Why don’t I just wear a sign that says ‘Too Ugly to Live’?”
• Blanche delivers the killer punchline: “Fine, but what are you going to hang it from, the chain or the pearls?”
Dorothy then storms off with “Neither! I’m gonna spray paint it on my hump!” It’s one of the show’s most quoted savage fashion critiques, perfectly capturing the ladies’ sharp wit and chemistry.
The episode (aired February 20, 1988) centers on Dorothy dealing with her mother Sophia (Estelle Getty) feeling like a third wheel on dates, while Blanche campaigns to be fashion show chairman at the local club.

Listen to this by Bea Arthur’s character Dorothy..I can’t count how many times a week this happens to me..it’s hard to recognize myself in the mirror..sometimes it’s scary to see what’s written all over my face..and body….

EC🎬 Fun Fact: The Golden Girls (1985–1992) The actress who played Dorothy Zbornak, Bea Arthur, had a very specific phobia that the show’s crew and her fellow cast members knew about: she was terrified of chewing gum. On set, if anyone was chewing gum, she would refuse to work until they got rid of it. She found the habit disgusting, and the sound it made would drive her crazy. The cast and crew respected this and made sure to never chew gum around her, which shows how much they all cared about each other to make the set a comfortable place for everyone.

Mame is a 1974 American Technicolor musical film in Panavision based on the 1966 Broadway musical of the same name (itself based on the 1958 film Auntie Mame) and the 1955 novel Auntie Mame by Patrick Dennis. It was directed by Gene Saks, and adapted by Paul Zindel, and starred Lucille Ball in her final feature film role. The musical numbers were choreographed by Onna White. The film also stars Bea Arthur, Bruce Davison, Robert Preston, and Jane Connell.
The story focuses on the madcap life of Mame Dennis (Ball), which is disrupted when she becomes the guardian of her deceased brother’s son. She marries a wealthy Southern plantation owner (Preston), is widowed, yet through it all, with the help of her dearest friend, Vera Charles (Arthur), manages to keep things under control.
