INApril 17, 2026, the Indian Lok Sabha rejected the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026, during a special Parliament session. This bill aimed to amend and fast-track the implementation of the Women’s Reservation Act (Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam) of 2023, which provides for 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies.
The government proposed linking the women’s quota to a delimitation exercise (redrawing of constituencies based on population), potentially increasing Lok Sabha seats from 543 to around 850, using 2011 Census data to enable the quota from the 2029 elections. However, the Opposition (including Congress, TMC, and other INDIA bloc parties) strongly opposed the bill, arguing that it was a disguised attempt to push delimitation that could reduce the relative representation of southern and populous states, and demanded immediate implementation of the 2023 Act without linking it to seat redistribution or fresh delimitation
