GEWhy is the Blue Dog blue?
The answer begins with a Louisiana ghost story.
George Rodrigue grew up hearing Cajun tales about the loup-garou, a mythical creature said to roam the swamps at night. When Rodrigue began painting the dog that would become his most famous subject, he chose blue — a color that felt mysterious, haunting, and unmistakably surreal.
What started as a reference to folklore, using a model of his old dog Tiffany, eventually became an icon as the dog got bluer and bluer. Today the Blue Dog is one of the most recognizable images in American art.
