migratory birds are beginning to arrive in our area, including american woodcock. this unique bird often travels through the city of buffalo where they find many obstacles and can collide with windows, often with lethal results. this bird was one of the lucky ones. he arrived with head trauma and an ulcer on one eye, but no bleeding or damage was seen on the inside of his eyes. after treatment for head trauma and eye drops to heal the ulcer, it was time to check him for release. i took him out to assess for strong flight and normal vision, and he passed the test! this evening at dusk, he will be released so he can continue on to his breeding grounds to do his “sky dance” and find a mate. #timberdoodle #americanwoodcock #bringbirdsback #wildliferehabilitation

The newly released 2025 #StateOfTheBirds report for the U.S. reveals continued declines in North American bird populations. “#BirdsTellUs that we have alarming declines across all habitats,” says Audubon’s Chief Conservation Officer Marshall Johnson. The report identifies 112 Tipping Point species that have lost half their populations in the past 50 years. That includes 42 red-alert species facing perilously low populations, such as Allen's Hummingbird, Tricolored Blackbird, and Saltmarsh Sparrow—birds that are at risk without immediate intervention. Audubon worked with a coalition of partners to summarize the latest science on birds to ensure their long-term health in the places where you live. Watch the 4-week-old Northern Royal Albatross chick from the Top Flat nest receive a scheduled weight check from a New Zealand Department of Conservation ranger on February 20! The ranger calmly places the chick in a bag before taking the measurement with a handheld scale. The Top Flat chick weighed in at a healthy 2.3 kgs (~5.1 lbs). The younger nestling from the nearby Top Flat Track nest (located in frame, to the right) was also weighed on the same day.
