CO“You’re married. That house is half yours.”
That’s what I used to think too.
We got married.
We built a home from the ground up.
We picked everything together.
We threw coins into the concrete for good luck.
And at some point, I asked,
“Does my name go on the house?”
I was told no.
“It’s better this way.”
“I don’t want that debt on you.”
And I believed it.
Because I trusted my husband.
Here’s what I’ve learned:
Marriage is emotional.
Home is emotional.
But ownership is legal.
Love does not replace paperwork.
If your name is not on the deed, the house is not legally yours.
It doesn’t matter who decorated it.
It doesn’t matter who raised the babies inside it.
It doesn’t matter who kept it running.
If you are married — check.
If you’re engaged — ask.
If you’re young — learn now.
This isn’t about being bitter.
It’s about being informed.
I still live here.
But legally? It’s not mine.
And if sharing that saves even one woman from finding this out the hard way… it’s worth it.
Protect your heart.
But protect your name too.
