SOThe federal government will temporarily suspend the fuel excise tax on gasoline and diesel starting April 20, in a move aimed at easing rising costs at the pump.
Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the measure in Ottawa on Tuesday, shortly after securing a majority government through three byelection victories. The tax break will remain in place until Sept. 7.
Ottawa says the suspension is expected to lower gasoline prices by about 10 cents per litre and diesel by four cents.
The move comes as global oil prices remain volatile due to ongoing tensions linked to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a key passage for global energy shipments. Since late February, supply constraints have pushed gas prices up by more than 40 cents per litre in some parts of Canada.
