WPFAMILY MOURNS | A family is mourning after a teen is killed just steps from his grandmother’s home, CBS12's Katie Bente reports.
A growing memorial now marks the exact spot where 18-year-old Ri’Chard Jackson was shot and killed Monday afternoon in the Pleasant City neighborhood of West Palm Beach, just steps from his grandmother’s home — and just months before he was set to graduate high school.
Balloons, candles, photos and a pair of sneakers line the roadway in the 400 block of 16th Street, where police say Jackson was fatally shot around 3:40 p.m. Family members say the memorial stands precisely where he collapsed after walking out of his grandmother’s house — the farthest he made it before gunfire erupted.
“This is where his body actually laid,” said Chiquita Jackson, his aunt, who spoke with CBS12 News reporter Katie Bente. “He literally had just walked out of Grandma’s house. And this is the furthest he made it before gunfire went off.”
West Palm Beach police said officers responded to reports of a shooting and found Jackson suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency crews attempted lifesaving measures, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Chiquita Jackson said she arrived moments after learning her nephew had possibly been shot and immediately recognized the police presence in the neighborhood.
