Three days before Step 2—the most important exam of med school—my score dropped to the lowest it had been all of dedicated. And I panicked. Like most students would, my first instinct was to study more. Lock in. Grind harder. Because when everything feels like it’s riding on one exam, taking a break feels like the worst possible decision. But what I didn’t realize in that moment was that this wasn’t a knowledge problem—it was burnout. After months of studying, balancing rotations, and barely taking real breaks, my brain was exhausted. And instead of cramming, I did the exact opposite of what most people would do: I took a full day off. No questions. No grinding. When I came back, I performed exactly where I needed to on my final practice test—and on the actual exam, I scored higher than I had on any of my practice exams. Here’s what that taught me: A late drop in your scores isn’t always a reflection of your ability. Sometimes it’s a sign that your brain needs recovery—not more input. If you’re in the middle of dedicated and your scores are trending down, don’t panic. Take a step back, trust the work you’ve already put in, and listen to your body. I use them during my core rotations and pair the rotation to my questions. This makes studying a breeze as I’m just reviewing the same content in rotation and at home with questions! 2️⃣ @comquestmed @truelearn : these are my favorite Comlex q banks and I have loved them for level 1 and 2 prep. Explanations are to the point, questions are similar to Comlex and difficulty matches the real deal. I use the OMM, ethics questions weekly to keep up with that material. I also try to do a mixed question set every other day (if time allows) to keep the comlex relevant info up to date. 3️⃣ the hospitalist handbook (UCSF), White coat companion & OMED videos: this is my favorite top tier content review resource. Hospitalist handbook is an online resource with internal med relevant info for all sub specialities- these are amazing quick reads for in rotation and during board prep. White coat companion is my holy grail resource to pass boards with ease, content is amazing, tables are relevant and info is so crucial. Last but not the least: omed videos, I use them as a refresher for important clinical and pathology concepts and watch lectures in free time. What resources are you using to prepare for boards?
