THSimon loves this book and now runs his hands over all his book, searching for braille!
Today is #worldbrailleday so I thought I’d introduce you to a controversy you didn’t know existed: CVI and braille.
There’s an old school thought that people with CVI (Simon’s vision condition) shouldn’t learn braille. I’ve had people tell me that he simply won’t be capable. That braille is obsolete. That reading print, no matter how exhausting, slow and difficult it is, is always superior to reading braille.
We like to fight the status quo and after learning as much as I could about the lived experience of adults with CVI, we committed to teaching Simon braille. The current idea is that he be a dual media learner - able to read large print and braille, but only time, and Simon, can tell us his preferred media. Until then, we will continue offering him plenty of opportunities to interact with braille.
Video description: a visually impaired toddler runs his hands over the pages of a braille book. He points to a large, raised drawing a vehicle. He turns the page and feels the page for more braille.
