In 2025, Mason Calder was stranded outside a small neighborhood community learning center in Virginia late at night after his car unexpectedly failed to start and his phone battery was nearly drained. The quiet parking lot and cool evening air made him feel uneasy as he waited alone. A facilities supervisor named Anneliese Rowan noticed Mason sitting in his vehicle while finishing her closing routine. She approached him kindly and asked if he needed assistance. Anneliese invited him inside to charge his phone and remained nearby while he contacted roadside support. Her calm and reassuring presence helped ease his concerns during the wait. Anneliese asked for nothing in return. Later, Mason shared the experience online, reminding others that small acts of kindness can make a meaningful difference when someone feels stranded.

POV: Alone in a tower filled with the world’s largest display of Alexander Calder sculptures. 💫 This room is filled with moving (yes, literally moving) sculptures by Calder. The giant mobiles turn and spin above as you cohabit their space, each one balanced on a tiny hook no bigger than your thumbnail. 😳 What seems impossible is actually a masterclass in balance. In the 1930s, Calder started exploring the concept of creating 3D paintings in motion - and eventually he transformed painting into sculpture and sculpture into mesmerizing choreography. What would it be like to live among the most exceptional Minimalist objects ever created? For Henry S. McNeil, Jr. and his children, Cole and Calder, it was simply a way of life. In their home, works by Donald Judd, Dan Flavin, Carl Andre and Sol LeWitt were not kept at a distance, but lived with among the rhythms of daily life. LeWitt’s 'Hanging Structure' stood in place of the Christmas tree, Ron Arad's chairs were sat in, not set apart. Light and season transformed the rooms and the artworks from one moment to the next. ‘Nothing was off limits to us … it was very much still a house and still very warm.’ Seen through the eyes of Cole and Calder, Minimalism comes into focus not as an austere ideal, but as something warm and joyful — shaped by form, material and space, revealed over time. 🔗 Discover the collection of Henry S. McNeil, Jr. and read more about how to live with Minimalism at the link in our bio. 📅 Defined Space: The Collection of Henry S. McNeil, Jr. | New York | 20 May

A common misconception about Calder is that his palette was restricted to primary colors. In sheer numbers, the majority of his works are black. But he used the full spectrum of color in his work, from forest green to bubble gum pink. When asked about the role of color in his sculpture, the artist replied, “Well, it’s really secondary. I want things to be differentiated. Black and white are first—then red is next—and then I get sort of vague. It’s really just for differentiation.”   Video: Untitled (1941) set in motion. © 2022 Calder Foundation, New York / Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York #Calder #AlexanderCalder #CalderFoundation

Alexander Calder first came to Saché in 1953 and returned almost every summer until his death in 1976. Over roughly twenty-three years, the village became a seasonal home and an important site for his late sculptural work.
