JOIf you say ‘Cal-ga-ry’ with three syllables, just know every local in the room is judging you…
In this city we try to find a shortcut for every word we pronounce. The fewer syllables you use, the more “local” you sound.
The Local Cheat Sheet:
•Calgary: It’s NOT Cal-Gary… it’s just Cal-gree. I have no idea who decided this but it’s just the way locals roll
•Shaganappi: Instead of Shag-a-Nap-pee, try Shag-uh-nappy.the slightest change makes all the difference.
•Cochrane: It’s not Coch-rain, it’s just Coch-ruhn.
•Chestermere: Chest-er-mere seems like it should be correct. BUT most locals just say Chest-uh-mere
•Stampede: most locals will just say they’re at the grounds
•University of Calgary: very rarely will you hear the entire institution name. it’s just U of C
•The Saddledome: you’ll commonly hear people say they’re at the Dome
How do you pronounce these names? Let me know in the comments (without causing a fight)!
