Talking to your child about potential unsafe scenarios should be part of every day parenting. Just like we talk about road safety, how to walk on the street, how to treat others etc. Here are some things I always tell my children. 1. I will NEVER send another adult to get you unless I have told you first or your school teacher tells you that I’m unable to be there. 2. My kids know who their emergency contacts are in case they need to be picked up by someone else. 3. If lost stay where you are don’t move. I will come find you. 4. There are no secrets from mom and dad. If anyone asks you to keep a secret you have to tell me. Even if you’re worried I’ll be upset I promise I won’t. 5. If someone tells you to come with them, scream “I don’t know you! You’re not my mom/dad. Get away!” And move away from the person. 6. Do not leave with anyone in uniform except the police. Stay where you are. I will find you. Older kids with phones and who walk alone need to be told. 1. Never send your personal pictures to anyone. Especially intimidate ones. Or ones with where you live or go to school. 2. Never hitch a ride with anyone even if it’s an adult you know (coach, teacher etc). If it’s an adult you know make sure to call your parent and check first. If your parent is not reachable. Keep walking. These are conversations we have constantly and role play as well with no alarm or fear to the kids. Having an open conversation about it keeps the questions coming from the kids and the steps clear in their mind. Role playing gives them a real sense of what to do, how loud to be, it creates a bit of muscle memory I hope they never have to use. I have flown alone twice with Abeer now and sometimes it’s super hard to juggle the bags, checking in and keeping an eye on Abeer. He knows he has to stay by me and walk beside me, however, I thought it was veryyyy important to teach him these things. 1️⃣ Look around and call out to me loudly. Stay in the same place, don’t wander around! 2️⃣ If I don’t find you soon, look for someone in charge like at a counter or in a uniform to help you. Ask them to announce my name loudly. 3️⃣ Stay calm! Be brave. Mama won’t go anywhere without you and will be looking for you too! I had taught him this over a year ago. And yesterday at the airport he saw a child crying loudly for his mom and he remembered all of this!
