Is Starboard to Starboard allowed? While COLREGs prioritize 'port to port' passing in a head-on situation for its clarity and consistency, it's important to note that it doesn't outright prohibit 'starboard to starboard' passing. Under certain circumstances, 'starboard to starboard' passing might seem preferable for safety purposes. However, this practice deviates from the standard 'port to port' approach recommended by COLREGs due to its potential for confusion and increased likelihood of misinterpretation or error. Especially in high-traffic areas, adhering to uniform navigation procedures is crucial for accident prevention. COLREGS Rule 15 explains crossing situations between power-driven vessels.🚢 If another vessel is on your starboard side, you are the give-way vessel and must take early action to keep clear. This rule is simple, but many officers hesitate and wait too long. Crossing situations are common in exams, watchkeeping, and real collisions. 👉 Save this for COLREGS exam preparation and bridge watch reference. 📘 Full explanation + diagrams in my COLREGS Guide (link in bio) “For educational purposes only, please refer to official IMO publication Colregs.” #COLREGS #Rule15 #CrossingSituation #OOW #DeckOfficer MaritimeSafety

Every navigator has a memory hack for COLREGs. Whether it's a rhyme, a hand signal, or a mental shortcut—if it works, it works! What matters is that you remember the rules when it counts. Because out there, memory could mean the difference between safety and disaster. Share your hacks—someone might need them. ⚓ What's your favorite COLREG memory trick? #maritime #cadet

When checking CPA (Closest Point of Approach) and TCPA (Time to Closest Point of Approach), always remember—ships can change course or speed at any time. Don’t ever assume the other vessel will follow COLREGs perfectly, or take the right action. Just like on the road, there are reckless drivers at sea too. That’s why it’s critical for you to always follow the COLREGs and use Rule 2 and Rule 17 when needed. Your CPA measurements usually reference the bridge or radar antenna, depending on your radar settings. But don't forget—we haven’t even considered the range of the target yet. This video trains your eyes to assess CPA and bow-cross range more effectively, which boosts your overall situational awareness and safety. ⚓ What’s your go-to strategy when you spot a risky CPA on radar? #maritime #cadet

Traffic Separation Scheme: Organized Maritime Traffic & Safe Navigation 🚢⚓ Traffic Separation Schemes (TSS) are the highways of the ocean. These internationally recognized systems organize vessel traffic in congested waters, reduce collision risk, and ensure safe passage for thousands of ships. Understanding TSS rules, responsibilities, and proper procedures is essential for every bridge officer and maritime professional. This video demonstrates how TSS works: incoming and outgoing traffic lanes separated by a buffer zone, with clear directional flow. Vessels in the incoming lane maintain their course and speed while vessels in the outgoing lane do the same, with a neutral zone between them preventing head-on collisions. The radar display shows the "stand on, give way" principle—your vessel maintains course while others yield, or vice versa depending on your position relative to the traffic flow. TSS compliance is mandatory in designated areas worldwide. Major shipping lanes, straits, and congested ports all use TSS to organize traffic and prevent collisions. Bridge teams must monitor VHF Channel 12 for traffic coordination, use sound signals appropriately, and maintain constant radar watch. Vessels in narrow channels must yield to larger vessels with restricted maneuverability. The rules are clear, standardized, and understood by mariners globally. Proper TSS navigation requires situational awareness, radar competency, VHF communication skills, and understanding of COLREGS. Position reporting, maintaining course and speed, and respecting the traffic flow are critical. This is organized maritime traffic management at its finest—a system evolved over decades to keep thousands of vessels moving safely through the world's busiest waters. Master these rules and help keep the maritime highway safe. 🌊⚓ #TrafficSeparationScheme #TSS #MaritimeSafety #Navigation #BridgeOperations #ShipSmith #CollisionAvoidance #COLREGS #VesselTraffic #MaritimeProfessional

⚓ **OVERTAKING RULES AT SEA - COLREGS MASTERY** Safe navigation depends on understanding and following established maritime rules. Overtaking maneuvers require precision, clear communication, and strict adherence to COLREGS (International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea). 🚢 **Why Overtaking Rules Matter:** Improper overtaking is a leading cause of maritime collisions. Clear protocols protect vessels, crews, and cargo. Every seafarer must understand these rules to maintain safety at sea. 🚢 **Key Overtaking Principles:** The overtaking vessel must sound proper whistle signals—two prolonged blasts followed by two short blasts. The overtaken vessel responds with one prolonged blast. Visual signals (two red lights or black balls) must be displayed. The overtaking vessel cannot alter course suddenly, and the overtaken vessel must maintain steady course and speed unless absolutely necessary. 🚢 **Critical Safety Points:** • Overtaking is strictly prohibited in narrow channels and traffic separation schemes • Always use proper signaling—never assume visibility • In poor visibility, reduce speed and sound fog signals • When in doubt, communicate via VHF radio • The overtaking maneuver must be completed safely and smoothly 🚢 **Regulatory Compliance:** COLREGS Rule 13 governs overtaking procedures. Violations can result in serious accidents, legal liability, and regulatory penalties. Proper training and adherence are non-negotiable. 💡 **Test Your Knowledge:** Do you know the exact angle that defines an overtaking situation? Check the Reel and share your answer in the comments! At ShipSmith, we support COLREGS compliance and safe navigation practices across all maritime operations. #COLREGS #OvertakingRules #MaritimeSafety #Navigation #ShipSmith Seamanship VesselSafety ShipSmithGroup

Before you can master advanced COLREG rules, you need to understand the basics of ship traffic rules. This video introduces you to the core idea of collision avoidance—how ships communicate intent through movement, not words, and why predictable actions save lives. Think of it as driving rules at sea—with much bigger consequences. Thank you @eaconag for explaining in this much better way!!
