I never imagined I would think about my small business in political terms. But when tariffs shifted and the de minimis threshold changed, the math changed too.
A box of 50 hats now costs $285 in shipping, and an added $250 in duties. What used to be manageable customs fees are no longer predictable. And research shows that more than 90% of tariff increases are ultimately absorbed by U.S. importers and consumers — not foreign governments.
When the threshold moved, I felt it immediately.
So instead of shrinking, I sewed.
This handmade bucket hat collection was created in the middle of recalculating everything — packing up a beloved home, reworking margins, and redefining what “Small on Purpose” means now.
Last year, while renovating my small mobile hat trailer, the first major project was installing an awning. The original awning was blue and white pinstripe with fringe — it gave the trailer a nautical, storybook feel. During installation, I snapped one of the support bars and couldn’t use it.
I kept the waterproof fabric.….
