Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) helps manage all-or-nothing (black-and-white) thinking by teaching you to hold two seemingly opposite things that can be true at the same time. 🧠🤔 • Both/And Thinking: Instead of “either/or” DBT promotes “both/and” (e.g., “My partner is ignoring me” and “Maybe they are busy”) • Synthesis of Opposites: The central dialectic is balance between acceptance (validating your current feelings) and change (working toward better outcomes). • Finding the Gray: It encourages looking for “shades of gray” in situations that feel like absolute extremes. Splitting can be so tough to stop. While there are a ton of DBT skills helpful for coping with and reducing splitting—the STOP skill, the TIP skills, Check The Facts, dialectics, etc—my biggest advice is to practice the Cope Ahead skill. By repeatedly imagining yourself using skills to cope with intense emotions and thoughts, rather than splitting, you’ll increase the likelihood you’ll actually do so. Imagining in our heads is similar to practicing, so diving into your detailed coping plan and fantasizing about it may be the thing to help you overcome splitting! All your favourite influencers are doing DBT skills and they might not even know it!!! Doing things ‘one-mindfully’ is a great way to feel the benefits of mindfulness without having to sit down and do a formal practice or meditation. If you have a terrible memory like me/ADHD you could try putting a post-it note by your kettle or toothbrush to remind yourself that every time you drink a cup of tea/brush your teeth, you will do so ‘one-mindfully’. 🌀🧠

A Terapia Comportamental Dialética parte de uma ideia simples e radical: não se trata de eliminar a dor, mas de aprender a viver bem apesar dela. Uma vida que valha a pena ser vivida não é uma vida sem sofrimento. É uma vida em que você sofre menos do que poderia — e desiste menos de si mesmo. Aqui estão 10 princípios centrais, inspirados nas habilidades da DBT: 1️⃣ Você não controla o que sente — mas pode aprender a controlar o que faz com o que sente. Emoções não são o problema. Impulsividade é. 2️⃣ Antes de melhorar a situação, foque em não piorá-la. Em dias difíceis, estabilidade é mais importante que perfeição. 3️⃣ Aceitar a realidade não significa concordar com ela — significa parar de lutar contra o que já é. Aceitação radical reduz sofrimento desnecessário. 4️⃣ Dor é inevitável. Sofrimento extra é opcional. Quanto mais brigamos com a emoção, mais ela cresce. 5️⃣ Você pode sentir intensamente e ainda agir com sabedoria. A mente sábia é o equilíbrio entre emoção e razão. 6️⃣ Relacionamentos saudáveis exigem limites, clareza e autorrespeito. Amar não é se abandonar. 7️⃣ Autocrítica severa piora o sofrimento — e não melhora o caráter. Compaixão consigo mesmo é uma habilidade treinável. 8️⃣ Mudança real acontece em pequenos comportamentos repetidos, não em promessas emocionais. Progresso é prática, não epifania. 9️⃣ Você não precisa resolver a vida inteira — apenas atravessar o momento atual sem se destruir. Às vezes, o objetivo é sobreviver ao dia. 🔟 Mesmo com dor, você ainda pode construir sentido, conexão e dignidade. Uma vida que vale a pena não é perfeita — é vivida com presença e intenção. A DBT não promete felicidade constante. Ela oferece algo mais honesto e mais poderoso: a possibilidade de continuar — com mais consciência, mais escolha e menos autoabandono. Se você sente demais, sofre demais ou já pensou em desistir, saiba: não se trata de “ser forte”. Trata-se de aprender habilidades para ficar — e para viver melhor enquanto fica.
