Here’s a quick review.
Ascending (Sensory) Tracts
These carry sensory information from the body to the brain.
1. Dorsal Column–Medial Lemniscal Pathway (DCML)
Fasciculus gracilis
Fasciculus cuneatus Carries: fine touch, vibration, proprioception
2. Spinothalamic Tracts
Anterior spinothalamic tract
Lateral spinothalamic tract Carries: crude touch (anterior), pain and temperature (lateral)
3. Spinocerebellar Tracts
Dorsal spinocerebellar tract
Ventral spinocerebellar tract
Cuneocerebellar tract
Rostral spinocerebellar tract Carries: unconscious proprioception to the cerebellum
4. Spinoreticular Tract Carries: slow pain, arousal pathways
5. Spinotectal Tract Carries: reflexive orienting to visual and auditory stimuli
Descending (Motor) Tracts
These carry motor commands from the brain to the body.
Pyramidal (Direct) Pathways
1. Corticospinal Tracts
Lateral corticospinal tract
Anterior corticospinal tract Controls: voluntary, fine motor movement
2. Corticobulbar Tract Controls: cranial nerve motor output
Extrapyramidal (Indirect) Pathways
1. Rubrospinal Tract Function: limb flexor facilitation
2. Vestibulospinal Tracts
Lateral vestibulospinal
Medial vestibulospinal Function: posture, balance, head/neck stability
3. Reticulospinal Tracts
Pontine reticulospinal
Medullary reticulospinal Function: muscle tone, autonomic control, posture
4. Tectospinal Tract Function: reflex head movements in response to visual/auditory stimuli
