Fr! 1️⃣ They only DJ at gigs Playing a set isn’t the same as practicing. 2️⃣ They never practice fundamentals Beatmatching, phrasing, timing, scratching. 3️⃣ They rely on technology too much Waveforms and sync can hide bad habits. 4️⃣ They never record their sets If you don’t listen back, you don’t hear your mistakes. 5️⃣ They only practice what they’re already good at Real improvement comes from working on weak spots. 6️⃣ They don’t study music deeply Great DJs know their library inside out. 7️⃣ They avoid difficult skills Scratching, vinyl, live remixing. 8️⃣ They compare instead of learning Watching other DJs should inspire growth, not ego. 9️⃣ They never leave their comfort zone Playing the same genres, the same transitions, the same sets. 🔟 They think time equals progress You can DJ for 10 years and still stay the same level. Improvement in DJing isn’t automatic. It comes from intentional practice. #DJ #DJTips #DJLife #Turntablism

When you start DJing, it’s natural to think the solution is always more music. More tracks. More playlists. More options. And in the beginning, that actually helps. But after playing enough rooms, you realize something else matters more. Knowing the music you already have. Understanding how it works on different crowds. And choosing the right track for the moment. Experience isn’t about having more music. It’s about knowing your music better. #DJLife

Most beginner DJs start the same way. You buy a controller. Download a few tracks. And start mixing in your room for hours. At first it’s exciting. But after a while you realize something… Your mixes still don’t sound like the DJs you watch online. Not because you’re bad. But because no one explains the small things that actually matter. Here are 5 tips that will make a huge difference when you’re starting out: 1. Track selection > fancy transitions The crowd doesn’t care how technical your transition is. If the next track hits with the right energy, people will feel it instantly. Great DJs are music selectors first. 2. Learn phrasing early Most house and afro house tracks follow 16 or 32 bar phrases. Mix at the start of a phrase and your transitions suddenly sound 10x cleaner. 3. Practice without looking at the screen Try mixing using only your ears. This improves your timing, rhythm, and confidence behind the decks. 4. Record your mixes Almost nobody does this at the start. But listening back is the fastest way to improve. 5. Don’t rush the process Every DJ you admire spent years building their sound. Focus on getting better every session. Consistency beats talent in the long run. Most beginner DJs think the secret to a great set is playing banger after banger. It’s not. In reality, that’s one of the fastest ways to kill the energy on the dancefloor. Great DJs understand something beginners don’t: A DJ set is energy management, not just song selection. If you change genres too fast, drop every big track too early, or ignore the crowd’s reaction… you’re slowly losing the room without even realizing it. The best DJs know how to build tension, release it, and control the vibe of the entire crowd. That’s the difference between someone who plays music and someone who moves a dancefloor. If you want to DJ, do these 4 things 🎧 1️⃣ Use the internet YouTube, IG reels, TikTok, there are so many free tutorials that can teach you the basics. 2️⃣ Learn from other DJs Ask friends, go watch them practice, shadow them while they prep for sets. Being around it helps so much. 3️⃣ Practice every day Even if it’s just blending two songs together. I challenged myself to make one mix a day and it helped more than anything. 4️⃣ Give yourself a deadline to perform Nothing forces you to learn faster than knowing you have a set coming up!! You might not be perfect at first (i definitely wasn’t and am still learning so much), but the only way to get better is to start before you feel ready. 🙂‍↕️❤️
