IKThe Enugu State Security Trust Fund (ESSTF) needs at least N5 billion annually to sustain security operations across the state’s 260 political wards, according to Fund Chairman Dr. Ike Chioke, who spoke at a town hall meeting in Enugu on Thursday. The plan involves deploying 20 security personnel per ward to monitor communities and gather grassroots intelligence — what Dr. Chioke described as the critical “boots on the ground” component of effective crime prevention.
The Fund, a public-private partnership inaugurated by Governor Peter Mbah in February 2024, has faced a significant funding gap, with only N1.3 billion of the N3 billion pledged during its 2025 fundraising drive actually received. Dr. Chioke appealed to outstanding donors — some of whom pledged up to N100 million without paying anything — as well as citizens and diaspora members to honor their commitments.
Despite this shortfall, funds raised have been used to procure surveillance drones, 10 patrol vehicles, 40 motorcycles for forest guards, and 400 bulletproof vests. These investments have contributed to a reported 80 percent reduction in kidnapping and related crimes since the current administration took office.
At the event, Secretary to the State Government Prof. Chidiebere Onyia credited the improved security climate with boosting the state’s economic growth and Internally Generated Revenue, while Traditional Rulers Council Chairman Igwe Samuel Ikechukwu Asadu called for greater public visibility of arrested suspects and urged that traditional rulers be involved in recruiting forest guards.

The message is straightforward — integrity is not optional, it’s compulsory. Everyone is expected to do the right thing, uphold discipline, and protect the credibility of the Commission.
So as they say in the spirit of teamwork (and small humor):
if you see something, say something… before the CCTV, audit trails, and your colleague says it first.
